Position Title:
Fish Culturist

Location:
Cedar, BC

Position Details:

  • Full time (37.5 hrs/week), permanent

Primary Job Responsibilities:

  • Provide a high level of daily care for wolf eels of all life stages
  • Monitor and maintain water quality parameters
  • Implement and adhere to disinfection and biosecurity protocols
  • Assist with weight sampling and grading procedures
  • Maintain thorough recordkeeping and perform data entry and analysis as needed
  • Assist with the design, installation, and modification/maintenance of life support systems
  • Perform gamete collection and fertilization procedures
  • Assess fish health and perform basic diagnostics
  • Administer treatments and identify appropriate endpoints

Required Qualifications:

  • A technical diploma, bachelor's degree, or equivalent professional experience related to aquaculture, fisheries, biological sciences, or adjacent fields
  • Experience with fish husbandry and propagation, including water quality and fish health aspects
  • Experience with the construction and function of flowthrough aquaculture systems

Key Skills, Experience, & Attributes:

  • Good communication and problemsolving skills
  • Understanding of fish biology and behaviour
  • Experience with fish weight sampling and grading procedures
  • Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team
  • Good observational and recordkeeping skills
  • Knowledge of fish gamete collection, fertilization, and incubation methods
  • Experience with basic microscopy and cell quantification techniques
  • Familiarity with research methods and experimental design

Conditions of Employment:

  • Working weekends, holidays, and emergencies as required
  • Occasional overtime and modified working hours during spawning events
  • The capacity to safely meet moderate physical demands associated with the position, including but not limited to lifting, pushing, pulling, standing for extended periods, repetitive motion; and exposure to noise, chemicals, and cold temperatures
