The Piruqsiivvik (Garden) Coordinator is a youth employment opportunity for Indigenous youth living in Ottawa.

The Piruqsiivvik Coordinator (PC) will work with the Food Security Team at TI and be responsible for the oversight, development, cultivation and evaluation of a new community garden located within Ottawa city limits.

The community garden will provide an opportunity for the Inuit community to learn about gardening, help to grow food and maintain a garden and learn how to preserve and process fresh produce for consumption.

Food grown in the community garden will also be distributed at the food bank.

Other key accountabilities of the position include:

  • Liaise with the Urban Farm in Ottawa to learn about the garden plot and how TI and the community can use the leased land;
  • Create a garden plan, including which plants to grow and how to organize the garden plot
  • Plant and maintain the community garden weekly, including pruning, weeding, watering and fertilizing the garden when appropriate
  • Harvest produce when ripe including picking the produce, washing, sorting and packaging the produce
  • Coordinate transportation of the produce to TI's foodbank
  • Develop and facilitate a program for the community to support in the garden and make preserves, dehydrated and processed food from the garden and purchased produce
  • Create a journal as a means of documenting the program activities and to evaluate the project
  • Track and report on deliverables as per funder requirements
  • Support with biweekly distribution of Food Bank when needed
  • Follow TI's policies and procedures
  • At all times, working in a manner that preserves confidentiality and seeks to minimize risks for clients, employees and the organization
  • Participate in meetings, training and professional development initiatives as required
  • Perform other duties as assigned and related to the position

Qualifications


Excellent interpersonal skills, case and file management skills, organizational and time management skills, critical thinking and problem-solving skills, and computer literacy skills are necessary.


The ability to work independently and in a team environment, create and maintain positive and collaborative working relationships that exemplify Inuit Qaujimajatuqangit, and work occasional evenings and weekends is required.


1 to 2 years' experience working in a social services environment, Completion of post-secondary degree or diploma in human services, social work or similar education or an equivalent combination of education and work experience, experience working with data collection and reporting preferred, experience with gardening, food preservation preferred, Experience with program development and facilitation preferred.
