Carpenter (General Repair Technician GRT)
Carpenters (GRT) at On Side rebuild and restore damaged personal property anywhere and anytime a disaster strikes.

With the goal of getting things back to a pre-disaster state GRTs use the skills of carpenters, drywallers, painters and magicians Making clients believe magic has happened is all part of a day for a GRT.


Responsible for
The multi-talented GRT is skilled in the following ways:

  • Repairs to wooden structures of all sorts
  • Framing
  • Drywalling, mudding, sanding and finishing
  • Brush and roller painting (could include walls, ceilings, trim, landscapes, and portraiture not included)
  • Ceiling installation, knockdown and texturing
  • Insulation and vapour barrier installation
  • Being awesome, in general
  • Installation
  • Doors
  • Trim, moldings, and baseboards
  • Hardware installation
  • Cabinetry

What you bring
The GRT brings a host of abilities to their work, not the least being a 'get it done' attitude

Additional abilities required include:

  • Experience working in construction environments
  • Tools and the skills to use them
  • Strong people and communication skills
  • Attention to detail, passion for quality and pride in the work you do
  • A safety mindset
  • Valid drivers license
  • Ability to pass a criminal record check
  • Ability to communicate in English

Other stuff that'll help you be successful but isn't mandatory:

  • Skilled trades ticket (Carpenter, Painter, Cabinetmaker)
  • IICRC certification (restoration focus)
  • WHMIS
  • First Aid

Of Note
Disasters can strike at any time so a rotating schedule of 24/7 after hours on-call work is a requirement.

  • Are a 'Handyman' around the house? List the things you are good at fixing:
  • Do you have your own hand tools to complete the jobs? On Side provides power tools.
  • Are you a Finishing Carpenter that can take job from insulation to completed task?
  • Are you comfortable working in disaster environments such as water damage and fire damage?
  • Will you practice good housekeeping at all times to ensure a safe and noncluttered worksite: work with a "clean as you go" mentality?
  • Are you able to work longer hours when required: 1012 hours per day and/or weekends?
  • Do you have any experience with demolition? If yes, please describe what you have demolished and tools you have used.
  • Restoration work requires documentation and tracking throughout your workday. Do you have basic computer and/or tablet/iPad experience?
  • Are you fluent reading / writing/ speaking English? If no, please rank your skills out of 10 (1 is basic, 10 is fluent)

Experience:

- home renovation: 1 year (preferred)
- trim carpentry: 1 year (preferred)
- rough carpentry: 1 year (preferred)

Licence/Certification:

  • Canadian Driver's License (required)
