Job Summary:


This position is responsible for assisting with maintaining the Halton Waste Management Site (HWMS), assisting customers in appropriately disposing of waste, assisting with coverage at the Scalehouse with processing financial transactions and following policy and regulation requirements to ensure compliance with waste management standards.


Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Assists with container station operations and directs customers to the appropriate waste management bins.
  • Inspects loads for acceptable and unacceptable materials.
  • Cleans and maintains the Waste Management Site.
  • Answers customer inquiries and assists when required.
  • Ensures compliance with site regulations and policies, such as material diversion and safety.
  • Performs Waste Management Site maintenance functions, such as collecting litter and snow removal.
  • Assists with Scalehouse operations, by maintaining a computerized landfill information system including accurate collection, screening and input of customer, sorting and filing tickets, and handling cash, credit card and debit card transactions.
  • Operates light equipment, pickup truck and allterrain vehicle.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Skills & Qualifications:

Essential

  • Must be working towards an undergraduate degree or diploma in Environmental Studies or related field.
  • Must be able to respond accordingly to written and verbal communications, as well as work independently and as a member of a team.
  • Must be flexible with assigned duties and be able to provide strong customer service in a pleasant, diplomatic and helpful manner.

Preferred

  • Previous customer service experience in a similar setting.
  • Excellent computer skills and a mechanical aptitude.

Working Conditions

  • The incumbent must be able to perform all the necessary physical tasks associated with the position.
  • This position requires work to be performed in inclement weather conditions and challenging terrain (steep, slippery slopes) and requires heavy lifting in excess of 20 kg.
  • Availability for regular work on Saturdays and Sundays (the HWMS is open Sundays 8am 12pm in May and June) is also required.
  • The incumbent will be required to drive a Regional vehicle and will be required to provide a copy of their driver's license and a driver's abstract, by their first day of employment.
