Position Overview
- The Parks Department has an immediate opening for a regular fulltime, Trades
- Tree Trimmer. This position entails skilled and semiskilled arboriculture work involving hazard tree mitigation, pruning, maintenance, planting, removal and falling of deciduous and coniferous parkland trees. The incumbent is responsible for acting as a lead worker and for allocating, checking and reviewing the work performed by a small group of subordinates involved in tree care operations. The position requires the individual to prune or remove trees using appropriate rigging, winching, climbing and cutting techniques; and perform heavy manual duties related to the work. Tree pruning and removals is hazardous work performed with a minimum of supervision and requires climbing trees using ropes, safety harness, power saws and other hand tools. The individual will also plant, stake, fertilize and mulch trees as well as report indications of hazardous trees, tree pests and diseases to a superior. This position also requires the incumbent to operate a truck and chipper to transport materials to and from the work site as well as perform a number of organizational and administrative tasks.
The successful applicant will possess:
- Thorough knowledge of the methods, practices, safety precautions, tools and equipment used in the pruning, falling, and planting of deciduous and coniferous trees;
- Considerable knowledge of growth characteristics of various tree species; and working knowledge of tree insects and diseases and methods for their control; along with an ability to identify hazardous and diseased trees and to take emergency remedial action;
- Some knowledge of DNV Park operations and policies related to tree management to answer general enquiries;
- Ability to perform hazardous climbing and pruning, falling and removal tasks at considerable heights above the ground; and ability to perform manual tasks under varying weather conditions;
- Ability to understand and effectively carry out oral and written instructions with a minimum of supervision; and ability to assign, check, review and participate in the work of subordinates performing semiskilled and unskilled tasks;
- Ability to keep records related to work performed;
- Ability to use Microsoft Office, and other internal software programs;
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with subordinates; meet the public and answer a variety of questions regarding tree management activities, and participate in preparing presentations and public demonstrations;
- Trained in the techniques and must be able to perform aerial rescue in emergency situations;
- Skill in the use of a variety of power and hand tools used in tree pruning and planting work; and skill in the use of safety harness and ropes used in climbing and rigging.
Qualifications:
Completion of the 12th school grade plus considerable experience in park operations; ISA Certification; OFA Level 1; and chainsaw certification.
Completion of a Trimmer/Climber course coordinated through the Provincial Apprenticeship and Training Board, supplemented by courses and in-service training related to all aspects of tree care would be an asset.
A valid Class 5 BC Driver's License is required.July 9, 2023.

Compensation - The hourly rate for this fulltime unionized position is $36.08 per hour (2021 rates) and based on a 40hour work week.
