Job Summary

The Carpenter provides carpentry for all construction and renovation projects handled by the Construction Management Office (CMO). Supports projects by providing trades skills and expertise with a significant amount of time spent on tools.

Performs skilled carpentry work on concrete forms, wooden framework, partitions and doorframes, moldings installation, stairs, sub-floors and floors as it pertains to the construction, repair and fabrication of buildings.

Organizational Status

This position receives direction and work assignments from the CMO Team Lead and reports to the Construction Manager.


Works closely with other CMO staff and all units within the portfolios of Campus Operations and Risk Management and Infrastructure Development.

Works with the campus community including students, staff, faculty, and contractors.


Work Performed- Requests and obtains material and equipment required for the work assigned and adheres to planned project schedules.- Performs carpentry repair work, new construction and fabrication of building structures and fixtures, such as wood and metal stud walls, wood frames, dry wall, plasterboard, forms, ceiling and floor tiles, molding and millwork.- Performs other trades/construction related work, such as installing concrete reinforcing rod and wire mesh and assisting in the pouring of concrete slabs and walls.- Troubleshoots and corrects carpentry deficiencies associated with CMO projects.- Produces inspection reports on assigned jobs.- Communicates with customers as required to ensure the efficient delivery of service.- Ensures that the workplace is safe and follows safe work practices.- Responsible for the correct use and safe-keeping of assigned vehicles, materials, tools and equipment used in the execution of work performed.


Responsible for administrative functions such as:

  • Keeps and maintains necessary administrative and system records, such as log books, records, and tool inventories.
  • May hold a UBC Visa card, purchase equipment and materials as required, and perform monthly reconciliations if required.
Performs other related duties as required

Consequence of Error/Judgement

Consequence of errors in judgment could compromise campus community safety. Work load backlog and delays could affect critical business functions.

Supervision Received

Receives direction from the CMO Team Lead and reports to the Construction Manager.

Supervision Given

Monitors and checks the work of apprentice(s) and contractors as the need arises.

Qualifications:

Red seal certification as carpenter is required. Completion of Grade 12 or equivalent plus completion of trades training to journeyman status. Over 6 years relevant experience or the equivalent combination of education and experience.

A working knowledge of relevant industrial safety regulations and building codes.

Ability to interpret drawings and specifications and to work independently with minimum supervision.

Experience erecting small-scale scaffolding.

Effective oral and written communication, organizational and problem solving skills.

Ability to work both independently and within a team environment.

Ability to provide quality service to customers in a courteous, patient manner.

Ability to develop and maintain cooperative and productive working relationships.

Basic computer skills in MS Word, Excel, and Outlook.


Proven ability to operate hand and power tools and equipment, work in confined areas, withstand heights and/or long periods of bending, and working in extreme climate conditions on a continuous basis.

Ability to perform strenuous physical work and assume uncomfortable or awkward positions.

Required to lift up to 50lbs on a frequent basis.

Flexibility and comfort with change.

Willing and able to respond at short notice to Emergency Calls related to CMO projects outside working hours. Must be able to perform call-outs for emergencies associated with CMO projects.

Valid Class 5 Driver's License required.
