Overview


Reptilia Vaughan is looking to add a part-time zookeeper to their dedicated team Zookeepers are safety-conscious, neat, punctual, organized, animated, fun, and resourceful people who enjoy working with Reptilia's animals and guests in the Zoo and Theatre.


Main Responsibilities

Animal Husbandry:

  • Provide species appropriate daily care and enrichment for a variety of reptiles, including large constrictors, large lizards, crocodilians and venomous species once appropriately trained
  • Feeding and diet preparation for herbivorous, carnivorous, omnivorous and insectivorous reptiles
  • Maintain proper food storage of a variety of diets
  • Observe animals and report any abnormal conditions to lead zookeeper and/or veterinarian
  • Maintain appropriate and accurate records of care, enrichment, medical and other necessary information for all animals in Reptilia's care
  • Participate in capturing and restraining of animals when necessary (eg. medical)
  • Assist veterinary staff in treating animals and administering medications
  • Participate in animal training programs
  • Manage and assist in training animal care volunteers, interns and coop students

Guest Experience:

  • Perform educational theatre shows and public feedings for Reptilia's guests
  • Respond to questions from the public in an engaging manner
  • Advise public on proper husbandry for their reptiles at home

Facility Maintenance:

  • Maintain facility cleanliness of assigned areas in the zoo
  • Clean and disinfect utensils, work tools, containers and animal food/water dishes
  • Perform minor or routine maintenance on exhibits and enclosures
  • Report maintenance needs

Ideal Experience

  • Reptile husbandry and handson experience with a variety of reptiles from a recognized facility (experience in a zoo setting and/or with other species will also be considered)
  • Experience with large and venomous snakes as well as crocodilians from a recognized facility are beneficial but not required
  • High level of knowledge on the natural histories of reptiles gained from various different sources and/or willingness to learn
  • Extensive experience in public speaking/showmanship and ability to present to crowds ranging in size from people
  • Some experience being handy good with minor repairs (e.g. enclosures)
  • Ability to work in a physically demanding environment, including lifting heavy objects (50lbs)
