Do you have a passion for animal welfare, and a desire to see that organizations treat animals in compliance with the law? If so, consider this Specialty Compliance Inspector position with the Animal Welfare Services Branch


In this fast-paced and exciting role, you will conduct fair and unbiased compliance inspections and research and report on all animal welfare cases, including those related to livestock, horses, and variety of animals sheltered in zoos and aquariums.

You will use your leadership skills to lead program delivery and deliver briefings, and engaged with various levels of stakeholders to collaborate on animal welfare compliance and enforcement.

What can I expect to do in this role?: In this position, you will:

  • Conduct inspections, compliance and education activities relating to organizations sheltering livestock, horses and a variety of other types of animals, including commercial breeding facilities and animals maintained in zoos and aquariums).
  • Manage highly sensitive, urgent issues pertaining to the health and welfare of animals
  • Assess the scope and determine the methodology needed to carry out an efficient inspection
  • Provide daytoday technical and regulatory expertise related to area of specialty in animal health and welfare
  • Provide technical expertise and advice to management and Inspectors on present and future risks, and program improvements

How do I qualify?:

Mandatory:

  • You must be able to obtain and maintain Provincial Offences Officer status.

Animal Welfare Knowledge:

  • You have knowledge of animal welfare stakeholders, positions and stakeholder management.
  • You have an understand of the behavior and health of diverse animals (i.e. variety of animals sheltered in zoos and aquariums) and when removal is required.
  • You have proven knowledge of animal welfare and protection, inspections and enforcement with specific focus on livestock, horses, and range of animals sheltered in zoos and aquariums.

Technical Knowledge and Expertise:

  • You have demonstrated knowledge of legislative and policy framework for animal welfare in Ontario including Ontario Animal Welfare Services Standard Operating Procedures and related legislation.

Analytical Skills:

  • You can analyze evidence, identify potential tests for proving theories and providing testimony in Court.
  • You can evaluate statutes, policies, codes and standards and make recommendations/determine impact to related animal welfare programs and related sectors.

Investigative Skills:

  • You can conduct factfindings, investigations, analyze evidence and results, identify trends and issue orders and make recommendations.
  • You can exercise tact and discretion with respect to caserelated information and evidence to the public or in the Courts.

Communication and Interpersonal Skills:

  • You can explain and interpret evidence and related legislation, policies, procedures and guidelines, and theories about the investigation.
  • You have interpersonal skills to persuade and ensure compliance with established methods, models and concepts of investigation, and reconcile differences, and determine an appropriate response in a variety of situations.
  • You have political acuity to work independently as part of an investigative team.
  • You have experience preparing evidence, detailed materials outlining compliance issues and trends, reports and briefing notes.
