is a city of approximately 750,000 located on the Red River, 108 kms north of the US border. Being near the centre of Canada, it is a major transportation centre. There are almost 50 Mennonite churches in Winnipeg, which is home to about 30,000 Mennonites. Winnipeg has two large public liberal arts universities and a Mennonite university (Canadian Mennonite University). There are also two Mennonite private high schools.

Winnipeg temperatures can range from 40°C (104°F) in summer to -45°C (-49°F) in winter, with average summer temperatures around 25.4°C (77.7°F) and average winter temperatures around -12.9°C (8.8°F).

  • This position is only available to individuals aged 15 to 30, who are legally entitled to work in Canada, and have a valid Social Insurance Number. This position is funded by Canada Summer Jobs and is dependent on Sam's Place receiving said funds.
    Job Synopsis
  • Sam's Place is seeking a mature, responsible, dynamic individual to staff our café and provide a wide variety of support amid potential transition.

Sam's Place is a coffeeshop and general store, currently located at 159 Henderson Hwy but set to relocate to 140 Bannatyne Avenue in early Summer 2023.

Sam's Place is a Social Enterprise that is owned by Mennonite Central Committee Manitoba.

It runs a Youth and Young Adult Employable Skills Program that provides opportunity for young people, often facing barriers, to develop employable skills and gain experience for their future in the work force.

We offer a simple food menu, handmade craft espresso beverages, and baking. Sam's Place also sells a wide selection of used books, locally made products, and Fairtrade goods.

The Cafe Associate will provide support where needed at Sam's Place, and more specifically with our Youth and Young Adult Employable Skills Program.

This support will evolve as Sam's Place plans to reopen at 140 Bannatyne Ave. sometime between June and July of 2023.

Thus, the first two months of the role will include tasks that will build groundwork for the Youth Program to function in the new space, whereas the last two months will include tasks in relation to Program execution.

Program execution will include, supervising and leading the team of Youth participants on the café floor, preparing customer meals or prepping food in the kitchen, providing customer service to Sam's Place customers, and providing administrative support for the Youth Program.

The position will also include helping with the physical relocation from 159 Henderson Hwy to 140 Bannatyne Ave.
The Sam's Place Café Associate will be required to work 30-hours a week Monday to Saturday. They will typically work 9am to 5pm but may work earlier hours on occasion, once the coffeeshop is open.

  • Must be between 15 and 30 years of age.
  • Must be available 30 hours a week between Monday to Saturday until end of contract.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Customer service experience in either the food service or retail industries.
  • Experience working in a team dynamic with a variety of different personalities/working styles.
  • Strong problem solving and money handling skills.
  • Attention to detail, willingness to go the extra mile, and superior organizational skills.
  • Supervisory or team leadership experience an asset.
  • Experience working with people of differing abilities an asset.
  • Experience working in a volunteer team or working within a Non-Profit/Social Enterprise an asset.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Aid the Sam's Place Program Coordinator in building curriculum materials for the Youth Program.
  • Support the execution of the Youth Program where needed.
  • Provide administrative support to the Youth Program.
  • Help set up the coffeeshop in anticipation of the reopen date.
  • Aid in the kitchen such as preparing customer orders, preparing line fridge portions, baking menu items, and organizing pantry and fridge inventory.
  • Provide quality customer service to Sam's Place customers.
  • Provide Front of House training, supervision, and leadership to Sam's Place volunteers.
