Duties:

The main responsibilities of the position are:

  • Providing technical and administrative support services to support the regional delivery of the Navigation Protection Program in implementing the Canadian Navigable Waters Act (CNWA) and the Wrecked, Abandoned or Hazardous Vessels Act (WAHVA);
  • Ensuring the quality assurance of program execution activities related to the review of approval requests under the CNWA and providing advice, recommendations, and options to internal and external clients;
  • Preparing responses related to complaints, briefing notes, access to information requests, notes for question period, and communication products required to respond to relevant information requests;
  • Undertaking preliminary review of project approval requests under the CNWA, conducting special projects, and integrating new service delivery mechanisms resulting from laws, policies, and procedures;
  • Providing program management support with budget planning and implementing lowvalue contracts for the removal of wrecks and obstacles.

Work environment:

The Navigation Protection Program (NPP) helps keep Canada's waterways open for transportation and recreation.

The program administers the Canadian Navigable Waters Act, the Canada Shipping Act, 2001, and the Wrecked, Abandoned or Hazardous Vessels Act.


Specifically, the program:
- approves and sets the conditions for works in navigable waters;
- assesses navigable waters for additions to the schedule;
- manages obstacles in navigable waters;
- enforces the Private Buoy Regulations (for more information on private buoys, PDF 1 MB);
- addresses irresponsible vessel management;
- grants authorization to individuals to dispose of, remove, or recover an abandoned vessel;
- enforces rules against dewatering (water extraction) or depositing materials in navigable waters.

EXPERIENCE

  • Experience in providing services (administrative, financial, etc.) as an information clerk to various clienteles.
  • Experience in building and maintaining relationships with internal and/or external stakeholders.
  • Experience in the use of Microsoft Word and Excel.
  • Experience in interpreting legislation, policies or procedures.
