1 temporary full-time position for up to 5 months intended specifically for students currently enrolled in a occupational health and safety or related post-secondary certificate, diploma or degree program, commencing in April/May 2024_**The Workforce Safety and Employee Health Branch is seeking a student who will assist the Hazardous Materials (Hazmat) Consultant with performing operational occupational health and safety tasks to support Business Areas across the organization.


As a part of the Safety Development, Systems and Health Services section, you will gain experience with hazardous building materials and exposure to other safety and health programs and services.

As a part of the team, you will:

  • Support supervisor and, once trained, conduct on-site inspections of identified asbestos containing building materials to assess the condition of the materials
  • Replace asbestos signage on mechanical rooms
  • Assist the Hazardous Materials Consultant with interpretation of thirdparty consultant reports and upload records into the hazmat database
  • Respond to Business Area inquiries regarding hazmat concerns in collaboration with the Hazardous Materials Consultant
  • Review sample reports, provide interpretation and conduct onsite meetings regarding hazmat concerns in collaboration with supervisor
  • Support Occupational Hygiene Consultants and Occupational Health Nurses with development of Safety Toolbox talks or Safe Work Procedures that will be shared with Business Areas
  • Other related duties as required

Qualifications:

  • Current enrollment a postsecondary institution, in an occupational health and safety or related postsecondary certificate, diploma or degree program
  • Experience using or referencing the Alberta Occupational Health and Safety Act, Regulation and Code
  • Experience creating detailed and thorough analytical reports

Assets

  • Experience with data integration into database platforms (i.e Tableau, Tririga)
  • Specific hazmat training (i.e asbestos 2day certification)
  • Experience conducting research, interpreting and synthesizing information, and presenting to an audience
  • Experience conducting onsite inspections or assessments involving visually observing, measuring, collecting and carefully documenting and reporting detailed information in an organized and consistent manner.

Conditions of Employment:

  • This position will be a combination of working from the office and onsite working conditions.
  • Valid Alberta Class 5 driver's license (or provincial equivalent). Must arrange own transportation to be reimbursed in accordance with City of Edmonton policy. This may require business auto insurance
  • Hire is dependent on a Criminal Records Check (CRC) security clearance that is satisfactory to the City of Edmonton, there may be a cost associated with this requirement
  • Compliance with the City of Edmonton's Code of Practice for Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), such as being fittested for a respirator, steeltoed boots and hard hat. Must provide your own safety boots.
  • Applicants may be tested

Hours of Work: 40 hours per week, Monday - Friday
