The Parole Officer's responsibilities include guiding the progress of offenders through a progression from most restrictive to least restrictive controls and from institutions to community supervision.

They ensure that legal and policy requirements for reintegration are met as well as manage the reintegration of offenders throughout their sentences while trying to maintain public safety.

EDUCATION

Graduation with a degree from a recognized post-secondary institution in a field that focuses on understanding and assessing human behaviour.

OR

Graduation with a degree from a recognized post-secondary institution and acceptable correctional experience.

Degree equivalency

EXPERIENCE
*Experience in formally assessing human behaviour.

*Experience in each of the following, with the aim of changing human behaviour: - Interviewing;

  • Motivating;
  • Counselling;
  • Making referrals or recommendations, and;
  • Identifying needs for intervention.

Note:

  • Experience refers to a welldefined role within a social services or correctional organization. The minimum experience requirement is of approximately three to four months.

KNOWLEDGE
Knowledge of the Mission of the Correctional Service of Canada.
Knowledge of the Corrections and Conditional Release Act and Regulations.
Knowledge of the case management process.
**Knowledge of needs specific to offenders in women's institutions, including Indigenous offenders, and gender specific programming.

COMPETENCIES

Sensitivity to working with diverse groups, such as women, people with mental health needs, Indigenous peoples, and ethnocultural groups.
