Working for the Department of Oncology


The Cell Imaging Facility is a multi-user resource that enables researchers in the Department of Oncology to implement cellular imaging techniques (Light microscopy, Electron microscopy, high content screening, etc.) in their research.

The Facility is available to other departments at the university, as well as to public and private sectors outside of the Cross Cancer Institute, on an availability and fee-per-service basis.


Working as a Transmission Electron Microscopy Technician


Under the supervision of the Cell Imaging Facility Manager, the individual will provide technical support for both research and teaching in the Cell Imaging Facility.

Duties will include assisting with or carrying out preparation of biological samples for Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM), operation of TEM and other microscopes in the Facility and acquisition of data.

The individual will also perform general laboratory duties to ensure the smooth running of the Cell Imaging Facility. Assistance with developing new TEM methods will also be required.

Duties

Research/teaching duties (85%)

  • Perform tissue processing (fixing, staining, embedding) and thin sectioning of biological samples for different imaging modalities for contracted or onsite labs.
  • To perform routine maintenance (e.g. alignment, performance checking, etc.) and operation of TEM and preparative equipment for TEM including microtome, knife maker, high pressure freezer, freeze substitution unit, carbon coater, etc.
  • Coordinate services and repairs of instruments when needed.
  • Troubleshoot user problems that arise during operation of instruments.
  • Assist and/or train new users in usage of equipment and other related accessories in the facility.
  • Assist users with the design of facilityrelated imaging experiments.
  • Assist occasional users with usage of instruments in the facility.
  • Assist users in image processing and analysis to generate data for publication and to provide assistance in interpretation of imaging data.
  • Provide staff relief in absence of other staff members in the facility. Provide staff relief for FoMD cell imaging core as needed. Perform occasional routine maintenance and user assistance for other, nonTEM related instruments in the facility, including but not limited to laser scanning confocal microscope, STED and image analysis systems in the Facility.
  • Monitor computers in cell imaging facility for routine maintenance including backup and restoration of systems. Perform frequent backup of the online booking system and maintenance of the data backup system.
  • Perform routine maintenance/upgrade and installation of software of computers and backup of data in the imaging facility.
  • Learn evolving software tools for image processing and analysis when needed.
  • Participate, in collaboration with other cell imaging personnel, in the development and presentation of practical sessions and workshops.
  • Facilitate training and product information seminars with technical representatives from microscopy companies.
  • Conduct tours of and promoting the facility.

General laboratory duties (10%)

  • Preparation, maintenance of lab instruments and ordering supplies, general laboratory maintenance (such as care and cleaning and instruments and preparation areas).
  • General lab maintenance including reagent inventory and maintaining the lab area in clean, operational order.
