About the Role

The Recreation Aide reports to the Therapeutic Recreation Manager/Recreation Manager or their designate. This role involves planning, implementing, and evaluating activity programs that cater to the holistic needs and interests of individuals while upholding the rights of residents and ensuring they are treated with respect and dignity.

Responsibilities

Include but are not limited to:

  • Be an engaged collaborative team player, fostering and maintaining professional relationships that enhance the organizational culture and purpose.
  • Assist in developing recreation and leisure services, including research, development, implementation, and evaluation of programs.
  • Promote and execute established recreation programs like outings, exercises, crafts, social events, and games.
  • Help create and share monthly calendars and newsletters outlining available programs and services to residents/tenants and families.
  • Coordinate external groups to deliver in-house programs.
  • Assist residents and provide support for attending programs as needed.
  • Observe, document, and report any resident changes to the supervisor and/or nurse.
  • Maintain a safe environment for residents, families, and staff by preventing accidents, following emergency procedures, using supplies and equipment safely, and reporting any necessary repairs or maintenance.
  • Keep accurate documentation as per policies, ensuring confidentiality and security.
  • Actively engage in orienting new staff, community programs, meetings, committees, and educational in-services.
  • Assist in maintaining statistical records using programs like Activity Pro and Point Click Care.
  • Help with the orientation of new residents and encourage their participation in the community.
  • Offer guidance, assistance, and support to volunteers, while also aiding in evaluating their performance.
  • Perform other relevant duties as required.

Qualifications & Skills:

  • Completion of Grade 12 Education.
  • A two-year Recreation or equivalent Diploma; or at least a Health Care Aide with a Recreation/Activity Certificate.
  • Prior experience in a senior-focused environment is valuable.
  • Dementia course completion is a plus.
  • Current First Aid Level 1 Certification.
  • Serving It Right Certificate.
  • Food Safe Level 1 Certificate is beneficial.
  • Valid Class 4 (Unrestricted) BC Driver's License.
  • All successful candidates must undergo a vulnerable sector Criminal Record Check aligning with Provincial guidelines.
  • Ability to handle physical tasks like pushing, pulling, stooping, lifting, and carrying up to 25 lbs. Must be comfortable working with cleaning agents and equipment.
  • Proficient in reading, writing, and speaking English, and understanding verbal and written instructions.
  • Strong interpersonal and organizational skills.
  • Basic computer proficiency including Word, Publisher, and Outlook.
