Overview


CAYR Community Connections (CAYR) is a community-based, non-profit organization that provides support, education and promotes access to dignified care for people living with HIV/AIDS and affected by HIV/AIDS, the 2SLGBTQ+ community, and people who use substances.


We are currently hiring an experienced and highly motivated Program Specialist who is passionate about harm reduction, has sound knowledge of HIV/Hep C and other STBBI transmission risks associated with sharing drug use equipment, understands the value of community-based and peer-led prevention program models, has strong community development skills, and is committed to enhancing health outcomes for marginalized and vulnerable communities.


The Program Specialist for Harm Reduction Education will be involved in the coordination, and delivery of a new harm reduction education program in York Region.

This is a Substance Use and Addictions Program (SUAP) project, funded by Health Canada.

The program is a partnership amongst agencies:

Addictions Services Central Ontario, CAYR Community Connections, The Krasman Centre, Regional Municipality of York Region, LOFT Community Services, and 360Kids Support Services.

These agencies together constitute the program Steering Committee.

This program will promote harm reduction policy change for local service providers and deliver harm reduction and overdose prevention services for people who use drugs in York Region, ON, including rural communities.


The project will create a peer-led harm reduction and stigma toolkit, inclusive of curricula and tools, to increase the knowledge and capacity of frontline staff in local community health and social service agencies that provide services to people who use drugs.

Peers will also deliver wraparound service educational sessions.

The goal will be to promote harm reduction policy and practice change in local shelters and housing services, Community Health Centres, clinics, outreach service and other settings.

The project will also deliver a range of in-person and virtual harm reduction services for people who use drugs including providing survival and harm reduction supplies (e.g., Naloxone), and distributing drug checking kits.


Job duties include:

Program Coordination and Delivery

  • Coordinate the implementation of communitybased harm reductionbased education and services for people who use substances and drugs in York Region to enhance lowbarrier access to harm reduction supplies, education, information, resources and services for community members and service providers.
  • Working with the Program Manager with the coordination and delivery of the Substance Use and Addiction Program (SUAP).
  • Distribute harm reduction supplies, including but not limited to drug checking kits, safer use kits, and naloxone.
  • Coordinate promotional and educational content/materials and regular updates to online and print communications related to harm reduction education, programs, and services offered both at CAYR and partner agency locations in York Region.
  • Work collaboratively with members of the Harm Reduction Education team to coordinate complimentary program objectives and activities. Team Development & Supervision
  • Recruit and engage Peer Advisory Committee (PAC) members in program delivery and activities.
  • Identify and/or coordinate capacity building activities for Peer Advisory Committee (PAC) members. Partnership Development & Community Capacity Building
  • Maintain relationships with key stakeholders and the community.
  • Engage member agencies on the Harm Reduction Coalition of York Region and the Harm Reduction Subcommittee of York Region's Community Opioid and Drug Response Collaborative (CODRC) in service provider and community capacity building opportunities.
  • Develop and deliver harm reduction capacity building trainings and presentations for diverse health, wellness, and social service providers in York Region Program Evaluation
  • Partner with Harm Reduction Education Manager to develop, revise and implement appropriate evaluation frameworks for program activities.
  • Support project evaluation and knowledge dissemination activities as required.
  • Identify service access gaps and work with Harm Reduction Education Programs Manager to help expand lowbarrier access to programs and services.

Data Gathering and Reporting

  • Gather data on service provision using appropriate tools and report data gathered appropriately to meet reporting deadlines and requirements as established by Health Canada, and in coordination with the program partners.
