The Role

As a Laboratory Coordinator, you play a pivotal role in ensuring the efficient and effective operation of laboratory facilities. Your responsibilities encompass a wide range of tasks, including managing laboratory resources, coordinating research activities, and ensuring compliance with safety and quality standards. With your organizational skills, attention to detail, and technical expertise, you contribute to the success of scientific research, experimentation, and analysis within the laboratory setting.

The ideal candidate will have the following background, skills and attributes:

  • Post-secondary education in Construction Engineering or Civil Engineering Technology. Secondary School Diploma will also be considered based on previous work experience, trade or training.
  • Minimum 5 years' relevant experience performing field and/or laboratory tests on construction and geotechnical materials including Aggregate, Concrete, and Asphalt.
  • Demonstrated experience with Alberta Transportation construction specifications and testing and reporting requirements will be an asset.
  • Previous experience as a CNSC Radiation Safety Officer will be an asset.
  • Previous CCIL certifications for Aggregate, Concrete, and Asphalt testing will be an asset.
  • Excellent organization skills and ability to multi-task; in addition to making quick decisions requiring sound judgment and experience.
  • Proficient in the Microsoft Office Suite i.e. Excel, Word, and Outlook as well as Teams and SharePoint.
  • Possess a valid Class 5 driver's license, including providing a 3 year drivers abstract.
  • Access to a light duty truck with valid registration and insurance will be an asset.
  • Ability to travel throughout Northern and North Central Alberta as required.

Job Duties:

  • Manages the day-to-day operations of the Peace River laboratory including area mobile lab trailers and the supervision and training of Junior members.
  • Collaborates with the Manager, Peace Region Operations and Project Managers to promote continuous quality monitoring and improvement on projects and with other Laboratory Supervisors including Calgary.
  • Performs day to day laboratory testing services of soils, aggregate, concrete and asphalt including assisting Project Managers with materials testing report review and client acceptance.
  • Responsible for laboratory personnel training, tools & equipment, safety, mobile labs and ensures that project requirements are met.
  • Supervises or monitors laboratory activities to ensure that the work is executed on time and in accordance with the client and project requirements and within company policies, procedures and standards.
  • Supervises the efficient utilization of facilities and equipment assigned to them and makes requests for additional equipment and facilities.
  • Assists in scheduling staff for projects and laboratory work requirements, prioritizing project demands.
  • Preparation and distribution of reports, and liaison with Egis' technical staff and clients.
  • Provides feedback on the cost analysis of laboratory testing cost per test item and collaborates to establish unit rates;
  • Oversees calibration and maintenance of the laboratory equipment.
  • Oversees storage, handling, calibration and maintenance of CNSC licenced equipment.
  • Supervises the administrative systems of the laboratory to ensure that health and safety documents, laboratory protocols, calibration certificates, staff training certificates and any other documents needed for lab operation are in place and maintained up to date.
  • Play an active role in business development activities and marketing by establishing and maintaining positive client relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Work with the management team to continue to grow the laboratory and its service offerings.
