The Ministry of Environment and Climate Change Strategy is responsible for the protection, management and conservation of BC's water, land, air and living resources.


The Ministry's Climate, Hydrology and Snow Monitoring Section (CHSM) is responsible for the delivery of the provincial air, groundwater, surface water, snow and water quality monitoring networks.

CHSM provides coordination of equipment procurement and installation, data collection, management, publication and quality assurance, and reporting of air and water quality trends.


The Snow Survey Technician works with a network of other professionals and is vital to the success of the Ministry's snow survey information gathering process.

The scientific data collected plays a major role in flood forecasting and determining snowpack, water levels and stream flow conditions.

Job Requirements:

  • Degree, diploma, or equivalent in a natural resource field, plus one (1) year (or more) of directly related experience.
  • Experience in environmental monitoring and reporting.
  • Experience maintaining, troubleshooting, and repairing snow survey and meteorological monitoring networks and instrumentation.
  • Experience performing technical duties and working with fielddeployed monitoring equipment including data loggers, various types of water and climate monitoring equipment.
  • Experience in negotiating/mediating solutions in resource management.
  • Experience in managing datasets, data entry and managing metadata.
  • Experience working in remote settings.
  • Experience travelling in wilderness settings in both winter (e.g., skiing and snow shoeing) and summer.

Willingness Statements:

  • This position requires you to have a valid full BC driver's licence (minimum Class 5), or an equivalent class driver's licence from another province or jurisdiction.
  • Travel and work on weekends may be required.
  • Must be willing and able to travel extensively across the province and on short notice.
  • Must be willing and able to work at heights of up to 20 feet/6 metres for an extended period of time.
  • Must be available to travel by air, fixed wing, helicopter and overnight on short notice.
  • Meet safety standards of WorkSafe BC when working in the field.
  • Maintain physical fitness to be able to conduct field work which may include: travel to remote areas by vehicle, air, boat, snow machine, or foot; overnight or extended stay in rough camp conditions and outdoor work in all weather conditions; lifting and carrying over 50 pounds/23 kilograms.

About this Position:

There is currently one (1) permanent, full time position available.
This position is located in Sidney, BC.
Employees of the BC Public Service must be located in BC at the time of employment.
