The Instructor hours will be set at 21 hours a week over the course of 3 days.

Position Summary


Reporting to the Supervisor, Food Training Program, the Community Food Training Instructor is responsible for delivering engaging and informative trainings and workshops centred around food and cooking that prepares clients to find employment within the culinary industry.

The Instructor works collaboratively with clients, stakeholders and partners.

Through hands-on instruction and experiential learning, the Instructor empowers participants to develop essential culinary skills, make healthy food choices, and cultivate a lifelong appreciation for cooking.


Duties and Responsibilities
Program Development and Delivery

  • Support the development of, and prepare, and facilitate interactive food and cooking workshops, classes, and demonstrations for diverse groups within the community on topics including, but are not limited to, culinary techniques, knife skills, food safety practices, and nutrition principles.
  • Develop lesson plans, instructional materials, and recipes that align with program objectives and participants' interests and skill levels.
  • Provide individualized coaching and feedback to participants to support their skill development and confidence in the kitchen.
  • Adhere to and instruct proper food handling and hygiene practices.
  • Create diverse and culturally relevant menus and recipes highlighting seasonal ingredients, promoting healthy eating habits, and accommodating dietary preferences and restrictions.
  • Incorporate budgetfriendly cooking tips, meal planning strategies, and food preservation methods into program content.

Community Engagement:

  • Engage with participants, community partners, and stakeholders to assess needs, gather feedback, and tailor program offerings to meet the interests and preferences of the community.
  • Collaborate with local organizations, schools, and community centers to promote program participation and expand outreach efforts.

Evaluation and Documentation:

  • Monitor participant progress, evaluate program effectiveness, and collect feedback through surveys, evaluations, and focus groups.
  • Maintain accurate attendance records, participant demographics, and program outcomes for reporting purposes.

Qualifications

  • Diploma in Hospitality or Culinary Arts or relevant postsecondary education and experience
  • Professional experience in food preparation and cooking and knowledge of culinary techniques and nutrition principles.
  • Minimum three (3) years of experience teaching or facilitating community food and cooking classes, workshops, or demonstrations to diverse audiences.
  • A valid Food Handlers' Certificate is required.
  • Knowledge of regulatory requirements related to food safety, health and safety standards, and licensing in Ontario.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to engage, motivate, and inspire participants of all ages and backgrounds.
  • Creativity, adaptability, and enthusiasm for sharing culinary knowledge and promoting healthy eating habits.
  • Familiarity with communitybased programming, adult education principles, and cultural competency.
  • Ability to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends, to accommodate program schedules and participant availability.
  • Must be qualified to work in Canada legally for the employer.
  • Able to provide a Vulnerable Sector Screening check with a 'Clear' or satisfactory result that meets the operational requirements of the Agency.
  • Must have uptodate vaccinations against COVID19 with a vaccine that has been approved for use in Canada.
