Position Description


Under the supervision of the Community/Outreach Manager and in accordance with the vision, values, strategic goals of the organization this position will provide generalized and VAW supports and services to women experiencing violence and living in rural areas of Hamilton.

Through a feminist and intersection lens, the Rural Community Worker will engage in community development, raise awareness, and create pathways for rural women.

Through mobile engagement, the worker will provide safety planning, education individual & group counseling, assist women with obtaining and maintaining permanent, safe and affordable housing and assist with program development.

In addition to this, this position requires an individual to be able to work independently as well as work as a team member, co-ordinate and liaise with community and its services, participate in both fundraising and non-fundraising events that support the goals of the program, perform administrative responsibilities, maintain, and write accurate and concise statistical reports (submitted monthly, quarterly, annually, and as needed)


This includes but is not limited to, ensuring proper case management, record keeping, collection and reporting of statistical data for funders and the organization, to engage community stakeholders in advancing the vision and mission of the organization; grant writing and organizing/participating in community presentations and fundraising events.


Key Activities

  • To adhere to Interval House policies, philosophies, procedures, and work practices.
  • Engage rural communities and build interagency collaboration, provide public and professional education, and implement an outreach program.
  • Provide general and VAW specific counseling to women, with a focus on safety.
  • Use risk assessment tools to assess risk of harm and lethality and safety plan accordingly.
  • Provide intensive support to assist with housing navigation and obtaining/maintaining safe, affordable, and permanent housing.
  • Case management and case planning including crisis prevention/intervention, safety planning, housing, supportive counseling, parenting support, educational upgrading, job training, income support, health, and wellness services.
  • Support the physical, emotional and safety needs of children to ensure that they are receiving the necessary intervention, protection, and support.
  • Develop and coordinate good working relationships with referral agencies and other outside professionals, specifically including regional housing authorities, women's and children's counseling services, educational programs, job training programs, income support worker and health and welfare services.
  • Working knowledge of various housing options including nonprofit, private, coop and housing benefit programs.
  • Refer, advocate and network within the various systems.
  • Attend and participate in staff meetings, community meeting, committees, and related activities.
  • Coordinate and perform various operational and administrative responsibilities such as preparation of comprehensive statistical reports, data collection and providing research to support special projects including the preparation of the program reports as required by funders.
  • Other related duties as assigned.

Skills and Competencies

  • Strong oral and written communication.
  • Evidenced experience delivering supports, counselling, and programming through an intersectional feminist lens.
  • Experience and knowledge with developing and delivering programs.
  • Competent engaging, assessing and supporting women living rurally.
  • Experience navigating housing systems, including nonprofit, second stage and private market.
  • Strong digital skills including experienced with Office 36
  • Intersectional feminist framework.
  • Skilled in crisis management, including nonviolent crisis intervention and crisis prevention.
  • Experience with assertive mobile engagement.
  • Experience with fundraising and community development.
  • Strong understanding of system navigation and case management.
  • Must be confident, driven, proactive, creative, organized, and able to multitask.

Qualifications

Education Post Secondary Education, Diploma or Degree in Human Services, Social
Work, or related discipline(s). Preferred Social Work background.

Experience 3-5 years of experience with counseling, women's services, and a minimum of
2-years of mobile assertive engagement experience. Proven ability to engage and support high-acuity service-user
