This position works as part of the Community & Family Sevices team to ensure the Food Bank, Open Garden, and Food Reclamation programs provide the support for clients in meeting their basic human needs.

This position will be responsible for the planning, planting, tending and harvesting of the community garden.

This position will also be responsible for creating, implementing and promoting programming surrounding education about gardening and other food literacy topics targeting food bank clients and new comers to Canada and the community.

This position will also work with the Community & Family Services Worker in the operation of the Food Bank.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Community & Family Services:

  • Responsible for the overall operations of the Community Garden Program including planning, planting, tending and harvesting
  • Create and promote educational opportunities surrounding gardening, the use of the community garden and other food literacy topics.
  • Head up the collection, rotation and usage of Food Reclamation Program. Work to expand the program to other grocers/food related businesses in the area.
  • Meet with clients to assess their needs through intake processes using the Link2Feed client management system
  • Distribute food assistance through the Food Bank as per current operational policies
  • Issue vouchers to clients for basic needs for the thrift store as per policy and request
  • Provide resource referrals to clients to address needs
  • Organise and supervise receipt of food donations, recording, tidiness and safety of all areas used
  • Organise and help to maintain the cleanliness of all areas used by the Community and Family Services, and other areas
  • Under the direction of the Community Ministries Director, assist with the delivery and creation of new programs and services in the community as identified
  • Network with referral agencies and/or other community sources of assistance, as required
  • Provide Emergency Disaster Services as part of a team

Administration:

  • Input data into Link2Feed; complete and submit all statistical reports in a timely manner
  • Maintain confidentiality and keep accurate participant files and statistical records
  • Conduct all administrative duties as outlined with due diligence
  • Follow direction on the compliance and adherence to Operating Policies and Procedures (i.e. gift cards, vouchers etc.)
  • Track volunteer hours as per the TSA Volunteer Service Program and celebrate volunteer achievements as milestones are met
  • Ability to perform administration duties that may need to be addressed in the absence of the Community & Family Services Worker
  • Ability to tell the Ministry Units story through Social Media platforms

QUALIFICATIONS AND EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS:

Education/Certifications:

  • Criminal Record Check
- (a) between 15 and 30 years of age (inclusive) at the start of employment;
- (b) a Canadian Citizen, permanent resident, or person on whom refugee protection has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act*; and
- (c) legally entitled to work according to the relevant provincial / territorial legislation and regulations.

  • International students are not eligible. Recent immigrants are eligible if they are Canadian Citizens or permanent residents.

Experience:

  • Minimum of 23 years related experience including working directly with marginalized people
  • Experience in using Social Media promotion an asset
  • Background check consent

PREFERRED SKILLS/CAPABILITIES:

  • Knowledge of gardening
  • Knowledge of food literacy and food reclamation processes
  • Food Safe Certification an asset.
  • Knowledge of communitybased resources is an asset
  • Experience in office administration, computers and database entry
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office software
  • Ability to provide a valid Manitoba Class "5" Driver's license, own vehicle, and current driver's abstract that is satisfactory to The Salvation Army, in its sole discretion
  • Must be able to establish good working relationships with community partners
  • Must be able to work independently and as part of a team environment
  • Able to work in a consultative, diplomatic and tactful manner
