Scarborough Village, Ontario, Canada Julliette's Place (Homeward Family Shelter) Full time

PURPOSE OF THE POSITION:


Grounded in the principles of person-centred, trauma informed, self-determination and choice, the purpose of the position is to increase the organization's profile in the community, through the initiation and development of partnerships; through public education engagement, identifying gaps in knowledge of services and providing information of free services; to increase women, all who identify as woman and their families' capacities to live violence free.

The Community/Outreach Worker acts as a resource to the community at large, including ex-residents, to provide meaningful and relevant services, through dialogue and collaboration.


RESPONSIBILITIES:

Community

  • Initiates contact with community organizations, businesses, schools and others for the following:
  • In consultation with and approval of the direct supervisor, introduces Homeward-Family Shelter services to the boarder community
  • Meets with leads and presents available services offered at the shelter applicable to their respective communities
  • Maintains established partnerships
  • Seeks out new partnership opportunities for collaborations and or partnerships with Homeward Family Shelter o/a Julliette's Place
  • Initiates and or recommends new initiatives geared to supporting community individuals and enhancing the work of Homeward Family Shelter o/a Julliette's Place in the community
  • Makes referrals to inhouse colleagues i.e., THSW, CA, or with the approval of your direct supervisor

Legal Counselling:

  • Applies current knowledge and demonstrates skill in the area of Immigration, Criminal and Family Law
  • Conducts assessments and identifies clients' immigration, criminal and or family legal needs
  • Provides information and referrals to legal aid, lawyers and other relevant legal services
  • Negotiates goal plans with residents that addresses legal issues
  • Demonstrates and maintains knowledge of relevant legislation regarding Immigration, Criminal and Family Law

Violence Against Women Counselling:

  • Works with women individually and/or in groups to establish a plan that will facilitate a safe and effective path to independence
  • Provides crisis intervention, informal counselling and referrals to callers
  • Provides crisis intervention, informal counselling for women and their children in the shelter
  • Demonstrates and maintains knowledge of relevant issues

Mental Health/Addictions Counselling:

  • Applies knowledge, stays current and demonstrates skill in the area of mental health and addictions
  • Conducts assessments and identifies residents' mental health/addictions issues
  • Provides information and referrals to detox centers, treatment programs, supportive recovery programs, and other relevant mental health /addictions services
  • Negotiates treatment plans with residents that focus on harm reduction
  • Demonstrates and maintains knowledge of relevant legislation regarding addictions/mental health

Group Work:

  • Facilitates groups, presentations and or workshops consistent with the goals of the Homeward Family Shelter o/a Julliette's Place programs for inhouse residents and community persons
  • Collaborates with community partners in implementing partnerships
  • Actively supports the fundraising programs of Homeward Family Shelter o/a Julliette's Place

Team Work:

  • Engages with the staff team in reflective practice to ensure the development and implementation of quality programs and services
  • Contributes specialized knowledge and expertise to team members to develop meaningful and relevant services for women and children
  • Actively participates in creating a collaborative and dynamic team environment

Administration:

  • Adheres to all policies and procedures of Homeward Family Shelter o/a Julliette's Place o/a Julliette's Place
  • Completes administrative duties as outlined in Homeward Family Shelter o/a Julliette's Place o/a Julliette's Place policies and procedures manuals and specific to your job description
  • Maintains records, compiles program statistics and prepares reports and correspondences as required
  • Participates in ongoing program evaluation
  • Ensures that community members/partners and exresidents are aware of their rights and responsibilities
  • Attends community coalition meetings and speaking engagements as required
  • Supervises students and volunteers, as required

General:

  • Assists with orientation/training of relief staff, students and volunteers
  • Actively participates in supervisory meetings
  • Any other duties as required that facilitate the effective service delivery of Homeward Family Shelter o/a Julliette's Place operations

MINIMUM EDUCATION/GENERAL EXPERIENCE/SKILLS REQUIREMENTS:
