Purpose:

Connected Minds:

Neural and Machine Systems for a Healthy, Just Society combines York's existing science and technology research ecosystem, and longstanding institutional strengths in the social sciences, arts, and humanities with Queen's University's complementary strengths in neuroscience, health, and artificial intelligence, as well as a substantial consortium of multi-sector partners.

The Connected Minds vision is to co-create and co-lead socially responsible, community engaged research that produces innovative technologies, policies, and regulations that optimize the benefits and mitigate the risks of the new techno-social collective.

Connected Minds is expected to fund 35 strategic faculty hires, partner-focused seed, team, and prototyping grants, KM/commercialization events, and an ambitious multi-institutional micro-credential training program with 385 trainees and cross-sector partners that require interdisciplinary participation.

York University is prioritizing projects that benefit Indigenous and other equity-deserving groups with this research.

Connected Minds, funded by Canada First Research Excellence Fund (CFREF), will lead Canada and the world in the socially responsible creation and adoption of scientific and technological innovation to promote a healthy, resilient, and just techno-social collective.


Reporting to the Associate Director, Commercialization and Industry Partnerships and the Program Director, CFREF Programs, the Commercialization Manager role is a key member of the Division of the Vice-President, Research & Innovation (VPRI) and is the lead for Connected Minds commercialization activities.

The role advances academic intellectual property commercialization, by mining for intellectual property, evaluating the patentability and commercial viability of the intellectual property, creating commercialization/business plans, assisting with commercialization funding opportunities, finding strategic industry partners, and leading commercialization plan implementation through licensing, startup company creation or alternative commercialization models, such as social innovation.

The role develops ongoing relationships with Connected Minds members, to support and enhance commercialization opportunities and outcomes, and manages industry/community engagement activities for the program.

In addition, the role fosters faculty and student entrepreneurship at York, by working strategically with the pan-university entrepreneurship unit, YSpace.


Education:

Bachelor's degree in a relevant discipline.
Graduate degree in Science, Engineering, or Law required.

Experience:

5 year's related experience.
Experience in technology commercialization, social innovation, university-industry collaboration, or technical product development.

Knowledge:

Knowledge of:
Technology commercialization strategies and practices
Academic-industry partnerships
Commercialization and collaboration agreements
Entrepreneurship
Funding programs for commercialization
Intellectual property (patent, copyright, trademark, etc.). legislation, changes, precedents, issues and emerging trends through current literature, networking opportunities, and regular liaison with technology transfer colleagues.
Contract, technology transfer and intellectual property laws.
Enterprise data system to track commercialization projects

Skills:

Effective project management skills to manage commercialization processes from beginning to end.
Effective leadership skills.
Ability to develop and maintain professional networks, relationships and create a presence for programs.
Effective writing skills.
Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines.
Effective communication skills.
Ability to work independently as well as in a team environment in a high-volume environment.

Normal office working conditions.
On occasion, some travel for meetings and networking events may be required.

Compensation:


York's CPM Compensation Framework has a salary grid consisting of 6 or 8 steps (depending on job grade) which is reviewed annually with possible adjustments, and a lump sum Performance Based Recognition Award.

Employees will receive the grid adjustment and depending on performance, eligible permanent employees may move to the next step of the grid and may receive a lump sum Performance Based Recognition Award.
