Primary Purpose: The Facilities Electrical Engineer - Buildings provides leadership and support for the University's electrical engineering functions, primarily focusing on electrical systems within our numerous buildings. As a team member of the Facilities Sustainability and Engineering unit within the Planning, Development, and Construction Team, the Facilities Electrical Engineer has a stewardship responsibility for the quality and sustainable operation of USask capital assets in support of University priorities, teaching and research.

Nature of Work: Reporting to the Engineering Manager, the incumbent works independently and with minimal supervision. As part of the engineering team, the Facilities Electrical Engineer works in collaboration with various University departments and external partners applying a high level of technical and analytical electrical engineering expertise. The Facilities Electrical Engineer supports, designs, and supervises both formal and informal various electrical engineering projects which impact the long-term function, operation and planning of the University. The work is of high complexity and involves a high level of responsibility and accountability. Work is carried out within an office environment; however, on occasion work outdoors and in construction and industrial environments is required. Work outside of normal business hours may also be required.

Typical Duties or Accountabilities:

  • Supports the effective and reliable operation and maintenance of the USask electrical infrastructure.
  • Support urgent and emergent activities.
  • Provide expertise, advice, guidance, to operations and maintenance activities, with a keen understanding of the university's client service focus.
  • Planning and future planning of the USask electrical systems.
  • Competency to stamp drawings for submission to the authority having jurisdiction.
  • Select and approve electrical equipment for renovations and new building construction.
  • Develops and regularly updates University Guidelines, Standards and Specifications related to electrical engineering.
  • In capacity as Owner's Engineer, ensure electrical consultants' drawing and specifications meet University standards. Support pre-construction, construction, and post-construction phases of capital projects:
  • Monitors current Code requirements and ensures the University and relevant stakeholders meet these code requirements.
  • Conducts studies and reviews of electrical systems to recommend repair and replacement strategies to ensure proper building operations and best practice for energy conservation.
  • Support Deferred Maintenance planning through review of annual building and infrastructure condition assessments in collaboration with Operations and Maintenance.
  • Engage industry partners to learn of new technologies that could be applicable at Usask and provide written recommendations to Engineering Manager.
  • Create autoCAD drawings and specifications for internal Usask projects.
  • Participate in building and infrastructure renewal discussions and planning sessions.
  • Discovering and documenting potential sustainability projects across campus, to help lower GHG emissions from any/all electrical systems.
  • Assist Facilities Electrical Engineer – Industrial to execute facility electrical distribution power system engineering studies including load flow (Paladin, ETAP, CYME), capacity, short circuit, coordination, and arc flash hazard analysis (CSA Z462 Workplace Electrical Safety and IEEE 1584 Arc Flash Hazard Calculations).
  • Design lighting, power, revenue-grade metering, security and fire alarm systems.
  • Assist with evaluations and solutions for moderate to complex facility electrical distribution power system design projects for system changes, modifications, and life extensions.
  • Provide guidance and consultation to facility electrical distribution power system designs and submittals.
  • Respond to information requests in support of projects impacting the facility electrical distribution system.
  • Conduct root cause analysis of equipment or systems failures using a systematic methodology to determine and correct root causes of problems, unplanned events, and occurrences related to the maintenance and the reliability of facility electrical distribution power systems, electrical components, and electrically operated equipment.
  • Provide feedback and guidance in relation to capital expenditures to reduce the USask carbon footprint.
  • Other duties as required.

Education: A degree in electrical engineering is required or an equivalent combination of relevant education and experience will be considered. Certification as a LEED Accredited Professional or other sustainable accreditations would be considered valuable assets.

Experience: Possess a minimum of eight years buildings electrical engineering experience. Provide project experience for at least three projects that would be appliable to USask's building stock. Knowledge and understanding of sustainability principles and familiarity with LEED project documentation requirements are valuable assets.

Skills:

  • Significant experience and advanced knowledge of electrical engineering discipline, specifically focused on buildings systems.
  • Experience using AutoCAD and Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, and PowerPoint).
  • Advanced technical, analytical, and decision-making skills with the ability to organize and coordinate multiple and conflicting tasks, with good follow-through.
  • Ability to prioritize and reprioritize activities.
  • Partnership colleague who can work with a variety of individuals at all levels of the USask organization to gather and convey information.
  • Effective customer service and interpersonal skills necessary to interact with technical, administrative, and management personnel.
  • Demonstrated ability to perform independent work.
  • Proficient verbal and written communication skills necessary to collaborate in a team environment, with the ability to clearly present and explain technical or operational information.
  • Excellent leadership and communication skills are required to motivate and collaborate with all project stakeholders to form an effective Commissioning Team.
  • Highly developed negotiating and facilitating skills and an understanding of the university culture and processes to ensure that project delivery and outcomes meet client expectations.
