The Faculty of Design is the largest of OCAD U's three faculties. It boasts six undergraduate programs: Advertising, Environmental Design, Graphic Design, Illustration, Industrial Design, and Material Art & Design (i.e. textiles and jewelry). The design-related Graduate Programs include Inclusive Design, Design for Health, Strategic Foresight and Innovation, Interdisciplinary Art, Media, and Design; and Digital Futures. The University is especially seeking candidates who might also contribute to the Inclusive Design and Strategic Foresight and Innovation graduate programs.The Faculty of Design invites applications for a full-time tenure-track teaching position within the Environmental Design Program at the rank of Assistant Professor, with a particular focus on interior design. The Environmental Design program and Interior Design Specialization are committed to decolonizing design practices and institutions to champion diversity, equity, and inclusion. All applicants must demonstrate the same level of commitment.The ideal candidate will be able to teach across the four years of the Environmental Design program and be instrumental in developing curricula emphasizing interior design within the scope of environmental design and architecture. Candidates who demonstrate capacity to develop curricula that foregrounds Indigenous knowledges and frameworks or Black knowledges and frameworks and their impact on Environmental design will be given priority. The candidate should demonstrate a critical engagement with their field and be able to teach tech-forward studio-based, lecture, and seminar-format courses. The candidate must be a Registered Interior Designer in the Province of Ontario (ARIDO), maintaining good standing for a minimum of five years, and must have successfully completed the NCIDQ Examination.
This appointment is expected to commence on August 1, 2024, and is subject to budgetary approval.
SUMMARY OF RESPONSIBILITIES
The successful candidate will:
Teach across multiple year levels in the Environmental Design undergraduate program, with the potential opportunity to teach in OCADU's graduate programs; Develop curriculum pertaining to Interior Design that supports the goals of the program and OCADU's academic plan; Assume a key role in accreditation review and liaisons with professional governing bodies; Assume a key role in contributing to student success at OCAD U through the ongoing development, decolonization, and bringing of diverse knowledges into the undergraduate/graduate curriculum, policies and promotion through participation in Faculty and Program meetings and initiatives; Develop course materials, conduct studios, and teach—including lectures, critiques, grading and evaluations that meet academic and curricular requirements and deadlines; Maintain an active creative practice, research program, professional practice and/or scholarship within the field of Interior Design; Provide service to the department, faculty and university-wide governance systems and participate in building OCADU's community and promoting student life and culture on campus; Provide outreach with local and regional Indigenous and/or racialized communities and the mentorship of Indigenous and/or racialized students and youth; Instructors will be expected to deliver courses in person, as well as have the capacity to deliver courses remotelyQUALIFICATIONS
The ideal candidate will have:
Be a Registered Interior Designer in the Province of Ontario (ARIDO) in good standing for at least 5 years; and have successfully passed the NCIDQ examination; At least 8-10 years of peer-recognized career achievement in Interior Design practice; A degree in Interior Design/closely related field; a Master's degree, or PhD will be considered an asset; Possess robust Interior Design industry connections for use in bridging academic studies with design professionals, suppliers, and industry partners; Administrative/leadership experience to play a key role in curriculum development, accreditation review, and liaising with professional governing bodies; Previous teaching experience at an undergraduate or graduate level in a CIDA Accredited Program; A demonstrated understanding of the ways in which equity, Indigenous knowledge, and sustainability are fundamental to the quality of student experience, to innovative scholarship, and to design production A proven record of promoting a respectful and inclusive work and learning environment for students, staff, and facultyREMUNERATION
