PURPOSE & SUMMARY


Sumas First Nation is seeking an energetic and qualified full time and on-call Special Support Worker to work exclusively with children requiring extra support at our Busy Bear Club Preschool.

The Special Support Worker will provide quality and inclusive programming in a group setting, supporting children and families.

Programming also incorporates the 6 Head Start components:
Culture and Language, Education, Health Promotion, Nutrition, Social Support, and Parent and Family Involvement.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Guide and assist children with special needs in the development of appropriate eating, dressing and toilet habits.
  • Contribute to development of Individual Support Plans (ISPs) for children requiring extra support.
  • Implement children's ISP goals in the classroom.
  • Observe children's response and progress to the ISP and recommend changes as necessary.
  • Provide suggestions to other classroom staff at the preschool about strategies and activities to work with children requiring extra support.
  • Ensure daily and monthly progress reports and monthly attendance reports are completed.
  • Provide input to curriculum and program planning regarding the needs of children requiring extra support.
  • Support and facilitate transitions to other programs including school, as directed by the Busy Bear Early Childhood Education Manager.
  • Participate in evaluation processes required by Supported Child Development and other Professionals.
  • Document and submit written observations of children if there are signs of potential needs.
  • Maintain daycare equipment and assist in light housekeeping, cleaning, and laundry duties.
  • Maintain a clean classroom following the cleaning policies and protocols.
  • Follow all childcare licensing requirements.
  • Observe and record the children's developmental progress on an ongoing basis.
  • Attend regular staff meetings.
  • Maintain confidentiality of all information related to the preschool's children, families, and staff.
  • Maintain professional development through workshops and conferences that are relevant to the field of ECE and Special Education.
  • Contribute to a positive team environment.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Experience supporting children with exceptionalities in a school or ECE setting is an asset.
  • A valid Emergency Childcare First Aid Certificate.
  • Clear Criminal Records Check conducted under the Criminal Records Review Act.

SKILLS/ABILITIES

  • Ability to plan and implement developmentally appropriate activities and experiences.
  • Knowledge and understanding of crosscultural issues that impact the Sumas First Nation community.
  • Knowledge of the Community Care and Assisted living Act and Child Care Licensing Regulations.
  • Understanding of the development of children and their mental, physical, social, emotional, and spiritual needs.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with parents.
  • Understanding of the importance of inclusivity of children with special needs.
  • Ability to encourage children's learning and positive development of their selfconcept.
  • Ability to appropriately guiding and supervising children in various settings.
  • Ability to supervise children's indoor and outdoor activities ensuring required safety standards according to licensing are met.
  • Possess excellent written and oral skills as well as interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to maintain healthy collaborative working relationships with members of staff, community, and other representatives from various organizations.
  • Ability to effectively plan and manage time wisely.
  • High professional and ethical standards.
  • Experience in working with First nations communities and/or organizations an asset.
  • Proven ability to maintain confidentiality.
  • Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with peers, managers, community members.
