JOB PURPOSE


The Assistant Director, Community Impact & Investment 1 is responsible for the strategy, implementation, and coordination of United Way's Hi Neighbour Initiative.

The role supports Community Engagement Specialist (CES) staff, front-line Community Builders, and Volunteer Coordinators to make meaningful and sustained change in defined neighbourhoods.

Reporting to the Director of Community Impact and Investment, this role serves as the primary contact and support across "Hi Neighbour" and designs and delivers strategy for the Community Projects team.

This role also leads and co-designs inter-departmental collaboration across United Way British Columbia alongside the Director & Provincial Director and develops processes and targets for other teams' collaboration.

This position will coordinate collaboration with Resource Development, Major Gifts, Marketing & Communications, and the Community Impact & Investment Team.

This position is responsible for directly overseeing various strategic projects for the growth and development of Community Impact Department as determined by the Director/ Provincial Director (Ex. evaluation, work with Post Secondary partners, and local government)

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

Strategy and Support


  • Leads strategic development & implementation and implementation of Hi Neigbbour strategy
  • Supports & directs CES team in development, delivery, and evaluation of "Hi Neighbour" objectives
  • Codevelops key performance indicators in engagement, neighbourhood fundraising, and community projects
  • Leads strategic crossdepartmental collaboration between community projects and other UWBC functions (including Resource Development, Marketing and Government Relations)
  • Develops best practices and evaluation criteria for Local Love Fund projects and consults on projects
  • Identifies and facilitates external partner strategic relationship development for ongoing learning with research institutions, innovation hubs, and sector leaders
  • Prepares and monitors budgets and strategizes around investments

Key Responsibility Area:
Community Engagement & Mobilization


  • Leads CES's to develop neighbourhood strategies and activities ensuring highest level of impact while following best practices
  • Incorporates a conceptual understanding of humancentered design, equity and justice, and assetbased community development into practices and procedures throughout the CII Department
  • Is the key strategic relationship holder for community projects and CESs, providing services, information, presentations to other departments in the organization, in particular Resource Development and Marketing and Communications to support donor and communication objectives
  • Is the key strategic relationship lead resource externally to promote the community project approach and raise awareness
  • Identifies opportunities and facilitates dialogue on justice and equity across project teams and works toward team comprehension and implementation of these principles
  • Trains, supports, and mentors a team of CES's to support and promote United Way's mission and values across the province (of up to 4)
  • Leads the strategic design of community engagement opportunities which mobilize and develop community leadership
  • Trains, supports, and mentors a community builder team (of up to 12) to assist with community engagement opportunities and cocreated solutions, and mentors CESs to implement in community
  • Trains, supports, and mentors Volunteer Coordinator to engage stakeholders, develop volunteer brand identity and training curriculum, and define a unique 'UWBC volunteer' experience
  • Identifies and implements opportunities for integration of CII volunteer tools within the CII department
  • Oversees the successful integration of UWBC volunteer strategy throughout the CII department

Support to Communities


  • Leads processes that ensure community social issues within neighborhoods are being accurately identified and addressed across the province
  • Provides, knowledge, data, and expertise on community services and issues to UWBC departments
  • Builds both internal and external relationships to recruit strategic partnerships and community builders
  • Fosters relationships with key partners and donors (including service providers, school districts, municipalities, and other partners)

  • Ensures departmental plans are aligned with overall strategic plan of the organization focusing on cross departmental collaborations to achieve maximum impact
