The electricity markets in the province are evolving. The AESO is mandated to design and operate electricity markets to deliver the safe, reliable, and economic operation of the Alberta Interconnected Electric System and to facilitate fair, efficient and openly competitive outcomes. The Markets team is responsible for the design and implementation of electricity markets to fulfil this part of the AESO's mandate. As an analyst on the Markets team, you will not only support the effective functioning of existing ISO market rules but contribute to rule development and implementation to support market changes. You will also contribute to Market design—helping shape the electricity markets in Alberta. In this position, you will collaborate with business units across the AESO and maintain relationships with the MSA, market participants and customer/ratepayer groups.

Accountabilities include:

  • Support the effective functioning of existing market rules (energy and ancillary services markets) and contribute to rule development and implementation.

  • Lead or contrbute to Market initiatives: develop implementation plans, contibute to design details, work in cross-functional teams; put together initiative plan, identify risks and trade-offs when assessing options, contribute to stakeholder engagements, identify quantitative analysis required, develop recommendations considering stakeholder input and assessment of qualitative and quantitative analysis.

  • Contribute to intitiatives lead by markets or other AESO departments.

  • Effectively make decisions within accountabilities, escalate issues to leadership accordingly.

  • Support the development of regulatory filings and proceedings.

  • Update information documents to support market related rules.

  • Produce content for Market reports, consultations and presentations.

  • Contribute to the implementation of IT system changes and AESO processes in support of market related initiatives or rule changes.

  • Work cross-functionally on ISO rule related Requests for Information, Waivers and Variances, and ISO rule proposals from Stakeholders; manage market related inqueries.

  • Support and provide guidance to the Market Implementation team and other AESO departments on market related ISO rule matters.

  • Build and maintain stakeholder relationships, ensuring they are in line with the AESO's Stakeholder Engagement Framework.

  • Collaborate and support other analysts on the Markets team.

  • Deepen knowledge of legislation governing the Alberta electricity industry.


You have:

  • A post-secondary degree in Economics, Business, Engineering or other relevant discipline.

  • 2-4 years of relevant related experience.

  • Knowledge of the Alberta Interconnected Electric System, specifically the Alberta electricity markets and ISO rules.

  • Previous experience in market design or operations would be an asset.
