Job Description

Description:

Shared Health (1502-155 Carlton Street, Winnipeg MB, R3C 5R9), The University of Manitoba, and Department of Surgery (business addresses noted below), are inviting applications for a Surgical Breast Oncologist to fill our labour shortage in Manitoba. Main job duties include diagnose and treatment of diseases, prescribing medications and treatment, ordering lab tests and x-rays and other diagnostic procedures, consulting with other physicians as required, which job duties encompass 70% of the position.

The successful candidate would also be eligible for appointment at the rank of Assistant Professor, and appointed as a geographical full-time member of the Max Rady College of Medicine, Rady Faculty of Health Sciences at the University of Manitoba, which job duties encompasses 30% of the position. Job duties are required in English.

The clinical position will have its focus on the surgical management of breast cancer. Clinics will be run out of a nationally recognized Centre of excellence for the diagnosis and management of breast disease, with integrated services such as onsite diagnostic imaging and supportive services including specialized nursing, social work, dietitian, and lymphedema therapy. The Centre currently includes 7 surgeons and consultations are distributed equally via a central intake system. Close collaboration with plastic surgery for reconstruction is built into the system as well. Multidisciplinary case conferences run weekly with medical and radiation oncology from CancerCare Manitoba.

It is expected that at least 80 percent of the candidate's clinical time will be dedicated to breast cancer management. Depending on training and interest, there may be opportunity to diversify one's practice to include other areas of need, including melanoma, benign general surgery or endoscopy. Participation on a non-trauma acute care general surgery service and call schedule is expected.

The candidate must be eager to work in a group setting, showing commitment to working in a collegial and supportive manner with other surgical oncologists. In addition, the surgical oncology service has a strong track record of exemplary resident and medical student teaching that we wish to continue. The position does have ample non-clinical time where a commitment to education or research would be a strong asset to the group. The candidate will be expected to bolster clinical teaching in breast cancer in particular, with the audience being trainees from various backgrounds.

Qualifications:

The successful candidate must hold a Doctor of Medicine Degree with specialization in surgical breast oncology. The successful candidate must be eligible for certification with the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, and registration with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Manitoba.
