Position Summary

This is a Hybrid role in Ottawa

Thales Canada is looking for a Naval Architect student for the 2023 Summer work term on the AOPS and JSS In-Service Support (AJISS) program. This is an excellent opportunity for students interested in working in the largest in-service support program in Canadian history, supporting the Royal Canadian Navy's newest class of ships - the Arctic and Offshore Patrol Ships.

Working closely with the AJISS Naval Architects and other individuals in the LCMM & Engineering Team, the AJISS Naval Architect Student provides technical support of AOPV Hull Systems and Fittings. In this role, the individual will gain valuable working experience with troubleshooting technical issues with ship systems, working with ships technical data package, and gathering experience working on board the ships whilst alongside during their maintenance work period.

Key Responsibilities

Supporting the AJISS Engineering staff on various technical activities to achieve the agreed outcomes, including but not limited to:

  • Review of technical design and operating specifications to enable hull systems and equipment to be correctly operated or maintained;
  • Technical investigation into problems associated with hull equipment and/or system malfunction, including failure analysis and solution development;
  • Analysis of requirements associated with baseline changes to equipment;
  • Conducting physical configuration audits of ship systems and equipment;
  • Support the preparation of hull system related design change documentation including manufacturing drawings, installation instructions and test and trials documentation;
  • Prepare documented work scopes, suitable for the solicitation of quotations from external resources such as Original Equipment Manufacturers, suppliers, testing facilities or specialist service providers;
  • Conduct detailed naval architecture tasks, including:
    • Requirements analysis;
    • Design calculations;
    • Material compatibility investigation;
    • Research and review of equipment/system maintenance documentation;
    • Failure analysis;
    • Risk and hazard assessments;
    • Weight & moment assessments;
    • Support management of lifting appliance certification and testing; and
    • Assure compliance with hull related Classification Society, Naval Ship Code and Polar Code requirements

Key Requirements

Education:

  • Student enrolled in a Bachelor of Engineering Program in Canadian University, with a focus in Naval Architecture.

Language:

  • English (Essential)

Key Qualifications

Skills and Abilities:

  • Prior experience with the preparation of technical reports
  • Microsoft Office Suite

Education:

  • Senior Student in Naval Architectural Engineering preferred, though interested junior students will also be considered.

Physical Demands

  • Predominantly office work but will be required to work in dockyards and onboard Naval ships
  • May be required to undertake inspections in machinery spaces of Naval ships involving bending and twisting

Compliance Requirements

All applicants must be able to obtain a Canadian NATO Secret clearance and meet the eligibility requirements outlined in the Canadian Controlled Goods Registration Program and ITAR.
