Youth Reintegration Caseworker – Youth Reintegration Support Services
Full Time- 40 Hours a Week
The Agency
The Calgary John Howard Society (CJHS) is a charity that reduces crime and makes Calgary communities safer by helping youth and adults make positive changes and move away from criminal behaviour. We do this by addressing the root causes of crime through housing, education, employment programs and support so that individuals have alternatives to breaking the law. CJHS is committed to restorative justice and an organizational environment that recognizes the dignity and worth of each person. CJHS values diversity and inclusion and welcomes qualified applicants from all walks of life.
The Program
The Youth Reintegration Support Services provides a link to the community for incarcerated youth through the provision of direct assistance, information, advocacy, guidance, and related support. It is aimed towards reducing the negative impact of incarceration and helping with transition by providing appropriate guidance and support that will assist youth during and following their incarceration in order to maximize social inclusion and increase the likelihood of successful community reintegration. A continuum of service is established, beginning in custody, and following a youth's release to ensure expedient access to appropriate resources. Ongoing case management support is provided to address needs and assist youth towards attaining stability and independence in the community, thus increasing their likelihood of success.
The Position
Reporting to the Community Outreach and Advocacy Services Team Lead, the Youth Reintegration Caseworker will work collaboratively within the Community Outreach and Advocacy Services Team (COAST) at the agency, and with institution staff at The Calgary Young Offenders Centre. This position will work in tandem with other Youth Reintegration Caseworkers and Youth Advocates. Using a collaborative approach, the COAST Team provides intensive case management and facilitates wraparound supports to assist with release planning, connection with community supports/resources, employment related support, substance recovery, transportation, and cultural supports. Providing individualized, ongoing, trauma-informed support for individuals while helping them reintegrate into the community is integral to this role.
Position Responsibilities
- Provide outreach services to youth incarcerated at the Calgary Young Offender Centre
- Provide release planning and ongoing case management support in the community for youth as needed
- Help address immediate needs that address barriers to integration/social inclusion
- Accompany and transport youth to access resources in the community and attend appointments
- Transport youth in your personal vehicle with compensation for mileage
- Liaise regularly with client support systems (AHS – addictions/mental health workers, institution caseworkers, internal programming staff, community corrections staff, family, employer, landlord, etc.)
- Follow up with youth to assess progress towards goal and/or goal attainment
- Program marketing, networking, and building supportive working relationships with community resources
- Ongoing development of intake and assessment processes, outcome measurement and evaluation tools
- Data collection, database input, casework documentation, participant evaluations and administrative tasks
- Internal and external reporting as required
- Participate in regularly scheduled agency and team meetings
The Reintegration Caseworker will have relevant post-secondary education and/or experience. They will understand the Youth Criminal Justice Act and target population served. An ability to build relationships, and to demonstrate excellent interpersonal and solid case management skills are integral to this role.
The successful candidate will be required to provide:
- copies of their vehicle registration, driver's abstract, driver's license, $1 million liability insurance, and an assurance of vehicle safety;
- A current (within the past 3 months) finger-print based criminal record check is required. Your past does not define your future. A criminal record will not disqualify you from employment with us; we evaluate each application individually.
- Brain Story Certification considered an asset.
Applications will be accepted until suitable candidates found.
The Calgary John Howard Society thanks all applicants; however, only those
considered for an interview will be contacted.
