Detailed Overview

As a member of a multidisciplinary community mental health services team and reporting to the Manager, Clinical Services, or designate, the Psychologist has full program development responsibility including providing a full range of psychological services for ASTAT/Group Therapy Services, treatment of complex cases, and consultation and psycho-diagnostic assessments for clients of the Community Mental Health and Psychiatry Outpatient Programs. The Psychologist assists psychiatrists and other clinical staff with the planning and delivery of treatment services for adults who are suffering from emotional, psychological, behavioral and/or psychiatric illness. The psychologist also contributes to continuous quality improvement, program evaluation, client outcome research, staff education, and supervision of psychology students and psychiatry residents.
Responsibilities

  1. In charge of psychological services for the assigned program, coordinates the development, management and provision of psychology services through methods such as analyzing treatment needs and establishing and maintaining policies, procedures and guidelines.
  2. Participates in ongoing development and provision of evidence-based group therapy services for adults, using a variety of group therapy approaches.
  3. Accepts referrals from other clinicians, family physicians and psychiatrists in community and outpatient mental health services to provide assessment and treatment recommendations.
  4. Uses the knowledge of psycho-diagnostic techniques to interpret results of the �raw data� from tests, to clinicians on the mental health team.
  5. Offers consultation to colleagues on assessment and treatment issues, which may involve a direct consultation as with a formal assessment, co-therapy, or a discussion with colleagues over concerns regarding a particular client.
  6. Acts as a senior non-medical therapist to assist with complex issues.
  7. Provides psychotherapy in individual sessions with mental health clients with complex therapy needs who can benefit from: a) Cognitive Behavior Therapy, b) Dynamic Psychotherapy, c) Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy.
  8. Provides educational programs to the multidisciplinary team and to the community on treatment for prevention and early intervention of clients with mental illness including depression, anxiety, post traumatic stress disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder and other related issues.
  9. Produces and maintains confidential client clinical records in accordance with established standards and procedures. Writes timely and accurate reports of relevant observations and evaluation of care to ensure continuity of communication and full client documentation.
  10.   11. Support the development of evidence-based clinical guidelines and pathways for mental health clients by methods such as monitoring and evaluating their effectiveness.
  12. In cooperation with mental health & addictions services partners, monitors and evaluates the effectiveness, appropriateness and adequacy of programs, services and policies.
  13. Maintains related reports, records, and statistical data, in accordance with established standards and procedures.
  14. Participates as a member of local committees and planning bodies by methods such as engaging in program/practice evaluation, identifying opportunities for change, assessing available resources, initiating solutions, analyzing outcomes and identifying areas for improved efficiency and effectiveness in service delivery to enhance patient care for services and reduce service gaps in the community.
  15. Participates in ongoing clinical research to keep program content current and relevant, and provides education to team members in this regard. Prepares and presents reports and proposals that support clinical practice, research, and evaluation.
  16. Maintains broad development in the profession by methods such as reviewing literature regarding individual and group therapy, consulting with clinical and research experts within the field, evaluating clinical practice and participating in professional development activities in order to improve care through new practices.
  17. Supervises students from the field of psychology on Master or Doctoral level; supervises psychiatry residents in provision of group therapy services.
  18. Acquires and maintains appropriate testing and clinical materials.
  19. Initiates and carries out program therapy, dynamic and psychoanalytical.
  20. Performs other related duties, as assigned.

Qualifications

Education and Experience

Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from a University or school recognized by the College of Psychologists of British Columbia (CPBC). Current registration with the College of Psychologists of British Columbia (CPBC). Three years of direct clinical experience in a psychiatric setting with emphasis in program development and provision of group therapy services.

Valid Class V BC Driver's license and possession of personal vehicle with appropriate business insurance coverage.



Skills and Abilities

  • Demonstrated comprehensive knowledge and skills in the development and provision of group therapy programs.
  • Demonstrated ability in using and interpreting psycho-diagnostic techniques related to personality pathology and major mental illnesses, use of psychotherapy based on recognized theories of personality, family, behavioral and cognitive therapy, dynamic and psychoanalytical.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of assessment and diagnosis of mental illness and of clinical practice guidelines for the treatment of various disorders.
  • Knowledge of treatment issues relating to co-morbidity, both within Axis I and across the Axes.
  • Ability to prepare written assessments and provide treatment recommendations.
  • Demonstrate ability in implementing policies and procedures.
  • Ability to plan, organize and prioritize work with clients.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively as a member of a multidisciplinary team.
  • Ability to keep abreast of technological developments in the field to ensure high standards of client care.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of Code of Conduct, By-laws and other legislative documents issued by the College of Psychologists of British Columbia.
  • Ability to operate related equipment, including computer software.
  • Physical and mental ability to carry out the duties of the position.
