Our Sudbury Operations have been in existence for more than 100 years. With five mines, a mill, a smelter, a refinery and nearly 4,000 employees it is also one of the largest integrated mining complexes in the world, managing a globally dispersed portfolio of projects, our project teams are responsible for the development and execution of annual budgets exceeding US$ 500 million

The Opportunity

We are currently seeking a Specialist Engineer – Projects (Constructability) to join our North Atlantic Surface Projects and Studies Department. This is a permanent position based in Sudbury.

The Specialist Engineer will work with the Area Project Manager and will undertake the duties required to assist the Owner's Project Team to lead the development of projects in a technically viable, efficient, and timely manner. The incumbent will be able to work independently to develop solutions to difficult problems with demonstrated ability to understand the needs of multiple stakeholders. The focus will be interdisciplinary coordination for scope definition/control, and schedule of engineering deliverables to meet procurement, construction, and operational readiness requirements. This position will coordinate with internal resources (not direct reports) through the execution of projects that they are responsible for.

Additionally in this position you will:

  • Leads and actively promotes behaviors with Vale's safety goals for all stakeholders including employees, contractors, customers, and members of the community.
  • Accountable for achieving zero harm by participating in the design of safe working systems, site inspections and safety interactions in their project area and ensuring all follow-up actions are carried out.
  • Influences project team members performance and influences their activities as necessary to ensure project requirements are achieved.
  • Communicates regularly with the Project team both internally and externally on strategies to ensure that goals and priorities are clearly understood.
  • Review proposed solutions to confirm general conformance with regulations, policies, standards, and guidelines. Provide feedback on any gaps or opportunities to ensure continuous improvement.
  • Coordinates the engineering input including project reviews for the project governance assessments and ensures follow-up actions are completed including technical bid evaluations, risk processes and engineering assessments.
  • Interfaces with other members of the Project Team and contractors to ensure no aspect of the project is overlooked or lags in progress and assists in the development and implementation of recovery plans.
  • Leads, co-ordinates and monitors construction, design, and study areas to ensure project requirements are achieved.
  • Coordinates the outputs of their assigned project team or teams in line with the detailed scope, cost, and schedule control baselines and manages any project changes in terms of this agreed baseline.
  • Ensures measurement of progress on all contracts for reporting progress to the and broader team as required.

About You

Education:

  • Bachelor's degree in engineering or related field.
  • Certification in a professional association (P. Eng) is required.

Experience:

  • Minimum of 8+ years (post P. Eng.) experience in similar role.

Skills:

  • Scope: recognized subject matter expert in their job area and serves as a technical advisor in that area; regional expert within the business in their field; serves as a consultant to senior engineers and others; challenges status quo in current and accepted practice; assists with the most complicated designs/work; routinely communicates with leadership in their work; assists in setting performance requirements/standards for systems; acts as a company advocate on national code/policy committees.
  • Problem Solving: problems faced are difficult and often complex; develops creative ideas for problems with no obvious solution; understands the needs of management and clients; applies expertise to resolve crucial issues and/or unique conditions.
  • Technology management: researches and keeps knowledgeable about new technologies in their discipline. Always looking to use the most current technologies in their work.
  • Autonomy: works independently; leads development of technical guidelines; leads technical process/routines.
  • Direction provided: Direction to more junior engineers, EITs. Acts as technical authority.
  • Support received: seeks advice on very complex problems from internal/external specialists.
  • Coordination of multi-discipline engineering design
  • Understanding engineering design deliverable development
  • Knowledge of engineering codes, organization/structuring for contracts to support procurement and construction processes.
