The Department of Psychiatry in the Cumming School of Medicine invites applications for a Senior Scientist, Framework for Research in Emerging Adults. This Full-time Fixed Term position is for approximately 12 months (based on length of grant funding), with the possibility of extension.

Reporting to the Principal Investigator.

As part of the "Framework for Research in Emerging Adults" research program, the Senior Scientist, FREA will lead a small research team focusing on the study of how genetic and environmental factors contribute to mental health disorders in adolescents and emerging adults, and how this knowledge can be used to improve interventions using a precision health approach. The Senior Scientist will work closely with Alberta Health Services on this research program, and will lead the development of knowledge translation activities in adolescent and emerging adult mental health.

Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

Research

  • Responsible for developing and leading project plans from collection to completion
  • Working independently to execute day-to-day activities of research team
  • Review relevant literature
  • Work with leadership to develop research plans and trajectories
  • Develop scientific research study protocols
  • Prepare and submit applications to the UCalgary Research Ethics Board
  • Develop a data management plan
  • Contribute to scientific publications

Leadership & Management

  • Strong analytical, communication and interpersonal skills
  • Coordinate stakeholder meetings to develop priorities
  • Hire and supervise research staff
  • Complete annual performance reviews including grievances, discipline and promotion of immediate research team
  • Requires strong interpersonal skills and leadership to manage the unpredictable workload, problems and conflict with research staff
  • Maintain the highest level of discretion, integrity and trust in all dealings
  • Excellent professionalism, diplomacy and a high degree of confidentiality
  • Act as a mentor and coach in training and development of junior staff members
  • Work closely with stakeholders internally and externally to the university

Project Management

  • Strong project management skills
  • Ability to think conceptually and directionally
  • Contribute to development and implementation of strategic research plans
  • Develop and manage the operational budgets
  • Develop and administer programs
  • Scheduling and participating in stakeholder engagement meetings

Qualifications / Requirements:

  • 5-7 years related experience and a graduate (preferably doctoral) degree in a related discipline are required
  • A combination of education, training, and experience will be considered
  • Expertise in bridging the gap between research and practice (knowledge translation, knowledge dissemination) is a strong asset
  • Experience in child and youth mental health an asset
  • Experience working with and building partnerships between diverse groups
  • Experience preparing reports for diverse stakeholders in multiple formats (e.g., manuscripts, press releases, infographics, presentations)
  • Ability to interpret and apply regulatory/compliance/scientific requirements
  • Advanced knowledge of the principles, concepts and practices applicable to a wide range of work in a scientific area, and broad knowledge of principles and concepts in other areas
  • Expertise in project management and strategic planning
  • Excellent leadership and organization skills
  • Data management experience
  • Ability to share knowledge and transfer own skills to the research team
  • Thorough understanding of research methods and ethics
  • Ability to develop and manage budgets
  • Knowledge of University of Calgary culture, policies, procedures and operations an asset
