As a Senior Process Safety Engineer at Irving Oil, you will serve as the Technical Authority in the Process Safety discipline within the Engineering Services organization. Your goal will be to play a pivotal role in ensuring safety, reliability, and compliance across capital projects. Your success will be demonstrated as an integral part of the peer group of lead subject matter experts in Process Safety within Irving Oil.

Your Responsibilities:

  • Risk Assessment and Hazard Analysis: ​Prepare, lead, and facilitate various risk and hazard assessments with stakeholders. These assessments include What-if, HAZID, HAZOP, LOPA, Procedure PHAs, Facility Siting Reviews, and Consequence Modelling.

  • Process Safety Risk Management for Capital Projects: Develop, implement, and manage process safety risk identification and analysis processes specifically for capital projects within Engineering Services. Conduct in-depth data analysis, interpret findings, and present study results to the Senior Engineering Services Leadership Team. Provide insights to support decision-making related to risk management, including facility siting concerns. Develop and distribute study reports.

  • Technical Authority and Peer Group Collaboration: Act as the Technical Authority in the Process Safety discipline. Collaborate closely with other lead subject matter experts within Irving Oil.

  • Safety in Design and Fit-for-Purpose Solutions for Capital Projects: Play a critical role in ensuring safety in design and fit-for-purpose solutions specifically for capital projects.

  • Mentorship and Cross-Disciplinary Collaboration: Coach and mentor the process technical team and others to enhance process safety, process engineering, and PHA capabilities. Collaborate with Front End, Project Engineering and other Engineering Services disciplines, Process Engineering, Refinery Technical, Process Safety Management, and Project Execution Teams. Work on Process Safety related project assignments and studies alongside 3rd party consultants, technology licensors, and engineering contractors. Direct, review, and approve their work and deliverables.

Your Skills:

  • Pragmatic analytical skills; proactive in identifying risks and solving problems.

  • Excellent leadership, relationship and interpersonal skills; able to influence without authority and lead stakeholder alignment amongst various internal and external organizations.

  • Coaching and mentoring of junior peers on effective project engineering practices including: problem resolution; stewarding decisions; change management; and monitoring and reporting progress

  • Able to articulate technical concepts and other project information in a clear, concise way, in writing and verbally, through various Microsoft tools: Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Teams.

  • This position may also require you to be in the field periodically so you must be able to bend, stoop, crawl, and climb heights, while wearing all required PPE.

Your Experience:

  • University degree in Engineering with P.Eng. designation (or immediate eligibility) in New Brunswick is required.

  • 10+ years of experience in process safety and process design in chemical, petrochemical or oil & gas plants. A significant portion of that experience shall be in PHA/HAZOP/Risk Assessment Facilitation roles.

  • Relevant certifications (e.g., CSP, PE, or equivalent) are preferred.
