Job Summary
This is a one-year position with possible extension. The position will be located in the research laboratory of the principal investigator (PI), Dr. Jane Hill, within the Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering at the University of British Columbia, Vancouver Campus. Dr. Hill's primary research emphasis lies in utilizing advanced analytical tools to explore the potential of 'omics in enhancing the diagnosis of human diseases. Her specific focus is on exhaled breath and blood-based transcriptomics. Her team collaborates with researchers globally.

Organizational Status
This position directly reports to Dr. Hill and responsible for performing research and analyzing for Dr. Hill's research projects; responsible for writing grant proposals to secure funding as well as writing, reviewing and editing manuscripts, presentations and posters. This position is responsible for identifying and monitoring funding opportunities (national and international), developing as well as implementing project protocols, work plans, and timelines. This position will be responsible for the administrative and financial management of research projects, and provides substantial administration support to the team.

Work Performed

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Communicates and assists with Dr. Hill on a regular basis to review documents and identify upcoming funding sources.

  • Explores internal and external funding announcements on a consistent basis to pinpoint potential funding opportunities, assess eligibility criteria, determine application.

  • Responsible in writing and editing grant applications.

  • Develops and implements persuasive grant proposal applications, ensuring strict adherence to funder guidelines and prerequisites.

  • Develops and implements project protocols, work plans and timelines.

  • Assists Dr. Hill in reviewing and submitting grant proposal applications.

  • Monitors awarded project budgets and stewardship reports in accordance with funder requirements and deadlines.

  • Submits a minimum of four high quality, substantial grant applications each year.

  • Assists Dr. Hill in reviewing and refining study designs, manuscripts, presentations, and posters for the research team.

  • Develops, drafts, and edits scientific manuscripts.

  • Provides guidance and mentorship to students and the junior researchers in the development of their manuscripts.

  • Monitors the documentation of manuscript development and its progress.

  • Plans and adheres manuscript submission deadlines.

  • Conducts/reviews comprehensive scientific literature reviews to critically evaluate and analyze scientific data, ensuring the credibility and accuracy of group scientific output.

  • Assists Dr. Hill in the submission of a minimum of 8-12 high quality manuscripts each year.

  • Works with Dr. Hill to forecast and track all research project budgets.

  • Monitors and reports on status of timelines, budgets, and scope changes on individual projects to Dr. Hill, and other stakeholders as needed.

  • Provide guidance and advice on the eligibility of costs for particular project.

  • Develops and uses a formal project management approach to manage and coordinate all cluster projects, including planning, executing, and monitoring detailed plans for each stage of the project.

  • Provides Dr. Hill's team with current research information regarding UBC, Tri-Council, and other organizations' policies and procedures related to grant expenditures and research project planning.

  • Supports the research team members in reviewing schedules, budgets, risks, issues and reporting requirements.

  • Follows department and institutional finance and research policy and requirements; coordinates with the Department Finance team; VP Research Office and funders to address any issues.

  • Meets the requirements of Tri-Council and other funding agencies policy and procedures as they relate to research projects within Dr. Hill's research team and collaboration network.

  • Advises researchers on regulatory requirements for the conduct of research.

  • Attends ethics review meetings; and prepare ethical review submissions.

  • Develops a network with other university units, granting agencies and program officers to ask questions on behalf of Dr. Hill and the research team members.

  • Performs other duties as required.


Consequence of Error/Judgement
This position requires to make professional decision and recommendations all aspects of research work and is responsible for the quality of research activities. Makes decisions regarding funding sources and the preparation of funding applications. Errors in performance of the above-related duties could have a significant impact on the effectiveness, image, reputation and financial status of the Research Group and the department. Inappropriate judgment could result in loss of potential research and/or infrastructure opportunities, or in funding shortfalls for specific research grants or contracts.

Supervision Received
Under the general direction of Dr. Hill, this position will be expected to work independently in accordance with established objectives; and exercise initiative and judgment in performing all work-related functions.

Supervision Given
This position is responsible for providing direction and/or training at UBC to graduate students; junior researchers and other junior staff within Dr. Hill's lab.

Minimum Qualifications
Undergraduate degree in a relevant discipline. Minimum of three years of related experience, or the equivalent combination of education and experience.

Preferred Qualifications

  • PhD in STEM discipline, with a particular emphasis on either analytical chemistry, 'omics, or data analysis.

  • Willingness to respect diverse perspectives, including perspectives in conflict with one's own

  • Demonstrates a commitment to enhancing one's own awareness, knowledge, and skills related to equity, diversity, and inclusion

  • Five peer-reviewed manuscripts, with at least two of them as the first or corresponding author.

  • Grant writing experience in Canada and/or the US will be an asset.

  • Proficiency in using Microsoft Office, including Outlook, Excel, and Word, and other relevant software applications.

  • Strong track record authoring peer-reviewed manuscripts in internationally-recognized journals.

  • Demonstrates ability to write persuasive grant proposals and funding applications.

  • Demonstrates ability to write peer-reviewed manuscripts.

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, including presentations and public speaking skills to represent UBC and the Hill Lab in a professional and confident manner.

  • Exceptional editing skills.

  • Excellent organizational and time management skills, with the ability to prioritize tasks effectively.

  • Strong interpersonal skills to work effectively and sensitively with diverse constituencies in academic, government, and private industry settings.

  • Self-motivated, proactive, and able to work both independently and collaboratively in a team environment.
