Job Summary

The Injury Prevention Specialist is a vital member of the SMH Trauma Program. Working closely with the Trauma Program Leads, Data Analysts and other team members the focus of this role is reducing the incidence and severity of traumatic injuries within the hospital setting and in the community through education, policy development, and data-driven initiatives. The specialist will actively work with multidisciplinary teams to provide collaborative guidance, networking and recommendations based on learnings from concurrent injury prevention work both within and outside Unity Health.

Job Description

·Create, implement, and manage injury prevention programs and strategies tailored to the specific needs of our local population based upon a comprehensive understanding of local and trauma system wide injury patterns. Utilize injury pattern assessments to identify injury risks within the hospital and surrounding community and prioritize hospital based injury prevention work based on trauma registry and local epidemiological data.

  • Uses data registry and local, provincial and national epidemiology to identify program new development opportunities

·Leads trauma center efforts to develop and maintain an organized, coordinated, interdisciplinary, public health approach to injury prevention, develops injury prevention project charters and project management plans. Examples of injury prevention areas of focus include: Motor vehicle safety (e.g. distracted driving), motorcycle and bicycle safety/helmet initiatives, pedestrian safety, fall prevention, firearm injury prevention, violence intervention and screening programs and STOP THE BLEED® programs as community engagement strategies.

·Works directly with communications department to develop and deliver injury prevention messaging internally and externally.

·Creates materials (brochures, audio-visual aids, presentation handouts) to educate populations on the risks of traumatic injury.

·Serve as a resource to nursing staff, pre-hospital personnel, and other outside personnel related to trauma care and injury prevention education.

·Maintain full compliance with American College of Surgeons Level 1 Injury Prevention Standards including the implementation of at least two Injury Prevention activities over the course of the American College of Surgeons verification cycles with specific objectives and deliverables that address separate major causes of injury in the community.Initiatives could include, but are not limited to, outreach programs for youth, programs to decrease trauma recidivism, falls reduction strategies and messaging, older adult independence maintenance/healthy aging strategies, summer safety messaging campaigns, reducing alcohol and other intoxicant related injury and micro-transportation injury reduction.

  • Develops partnerships with community organizations to understand, quantify and support local community injury prevention.
  • Advocate for policy changes at local, provincial, and national levels to advance injury prevention initiatives and improve injury prevention legislation.
  • Engage with community groups, schools, and other local organizations to extend injury prevention efforts beyond the hospital.
  • Identifies, pursues and obtains sources of program support and/or grant funding.
  • Ensure the Injury Prevention Program is in strong fiscal standing. Assists with preparing cost center level budget information, monitors monthly operating statements and variances.
  • When available, develop plans for distribution of life-saving products to those in need within the community.

·Develop surveillance and monitoring tools to assess both the available performance indicators of the trauma center¿s prevention efforts and prevention effectiveness.

  • Works together with collaborators to exchange data to better understand root cause of problems and how to intervene to decrease injury and death
  • Demonstrates evidence of partnerships with community organizations to support their injury prevention efforts
  • Advocate for policy changes at local, provincial, and national levels to advance injury prevention initiatives and improve injury prevention legislation.
  • Engage with community groups, schools, and other local organizations to extend injury prevention efforts beyond the hospital.
  • Partner with local print and broadcast media, and be prepared for opportunities for trauma center leaders to serve as a reliable source of injury prevention information.
  • Understand your audience and at-risk populations, and articulate an injury prevention message based upon our communities vantage point
  • Work closely with community partners, public health departments, and other agencies to build a cohesive injury prevention network.
  • Prepare and present reports on program activities, outcomes, and impact to stakeholders and funding bodies

Qualifications:

  • Successful completion of a Bachelor¿s degree in Science, Health Sciences, biostatistics or epidemiology, or other related field required, clinical background preferred;
  • Three (3) year related experience working in a health care environment preferred;
  • Proficient in the use of Microsoft Office Products, e.g., Word, Excel, PowerPoint
  • Excellent analytical and problem solving skills, demonstrated ability to apply logical thinking to gathering and analyzing information;
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills required;
  • Excellent coordinating and facilitating and interpersonal skills required;
  • Ability to prioritize requirements for gathering, reviewing and analyzing data and apply best practices for effective communication and problem solving.
  • Good communication skills with the ability to listen for clarity and meaning to ensure mutual understanding in a conversation required;
  • Demonstrated team player with the ability to interact with coworkers and clinicians in a positive manner required.
  • Project management experience or training an asset.
