Reporting to the Medical Director, Clinical Prevention Services (CPS), the Tuberculosis (TB) Clinical Physician is responsible for the ongoing contribution to the provision of TB clinical care in CPS and the evaluation and support of TB related programs. The TB Clinical Physician works alongside the Provincial TB Medical Lead supporting the provision of medical expertise for clinical programming and evidence-based practice in CPS, providing expert consultation services and client care, and assisting with training, education, research and coordination of BCCDC TB Clinics.

The TB Clinical Physician will provide clinical care of patients in the TB clinical programs and participation in clinical teaching, clinical investigation, and quality assurance/program evaluation activities as assigned by the Medical Director or delegate, in consultation with the TB Medical Lead. Clinically related teaching, clinically related research, and clinical administration services specific to the Clinical Services covered in this Salary Agreement will be assigned in consultation with the Medical Director, Clinical Prevention Services or delegate.

Specific Accountabilities

Clinical Services

  • Review, revise and incorporate into practice clinical and administrative guidance provided in the Provincial TB Services Physicians' Manual and any other clinical or administrative guidelines; assist with activities relating to provincial and clinic TB guidelines and programming.
  • Assist with TB clinic referral triage and physician scheduling support as required by reviewing documents, attending clinic case conferences and meetings/rounds, facilitating discharge planning/prescriptions and consultation with clinic operations, nursing staff and nursing clinical leads.
  • Direct and indirect patient care, day-to-day management of patients as expected of a physician providing TB care including but not limited to, assessments, performing relevant procedures, writing physician prescriptions, attending rounds/team meetings, documenting patient care in EMR.
  • Expert provision of care to all patients supported by the TB clinical programs including clinic patients at the Vancouver and New Westminster TB Clinics, TB Virtual Clinic, Satellite Clinics and physician support for the TB Outreach program.
  • Being an expert resource to clinicians across the province for the TB clinical program including review of TB screening forms, and management of pediatric, complex and drug-resistant TB cases.

Clinical Administration

  • Assume the role of TB Clinic Lead working alongside the Clinic Coordinator, Clinic Nurse Supervisor, Senior Practice Lead, TB Nurse Practitioners, Public Health Manager and Provincial Medical Lead to optimize clinical efficiencies and ensure evidence-based, high-quality care with special attention paid to ensuring anti-racist and culturally competent care.
  • Participation in the evaluation of the efficiency, quality and delivery of the Services that require the professional expertise of a physician, including, participation in medical audits, peer and interdisciplinary reviews, chart reviews, scheduling and incident report reviews.

Teaching & Research

  • Clinical teaching of undergraduate and graduate public health, sessional physicians, core-resident clinical teaching, subspecialty resident/fellows, and physician/health. professionals including teaching provided concurrently with patient care.
  • Participate in and deliver education sessions, lectures, rounds and symposia at and on behalf of BCCDC.
  • Participate and facilitate clinical and other research directly related to the needs of clinic-served patients.

Qualifications

This position requires a Medical Doctor degree with current licensure or eligibility for licensure with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of British Columbia. Strong preference is given to candidates with a background and interest in TB and clinical systems transformation, including subspecialty IM (Respiratory/ID), General IM, Community Medicine, or Global Health. An MBA/MHA would be an asset to this role.

The successful candidate will also be committed to upholding the shared responsibility of creating lasting and meaningful reconciliation in Canada as per the Truth & Reconciliation Commission (2015) and BC's Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples Act (2019).

As a strong asset for consideration, we are looking for our successful candidate to have knowledge of the social, economic, political and historical realities of settler colonialism on Indigenous Peoples and familiarity with addressing Indigenous-specific anti-racism, anti-racism and Indigenous Cultural Safety and foundational documents and legislative commitments (The Declaration Act, the Declaration Action Plan, TRC, IPS, Remembering Keegan, etc.).
