Lethbridge, Canada Lethbridge School Division Full time
Advanced Educational Support - Pathways Program

We are excited to have an Advanced Educational Support opportunity available mid to late August 2024.

Lethbridge School Division embraces diversity and functions in a dynamic, innovative, and fast paced environment. To help support student success, we are looking for a flexible, empathetic, optimistic, and patient individual to work as part of a dynamic team. Advanced Educational Support (AES) personnel work as members of the school-based learning team to assist classroom and learning support teachers in providing specialized supports to students with complex learning needs. AES in the Pathways Program will have specialized skills, training and/or experience in the areas of trauma informed practice, conflict resolution, family support access, or advanced behavior supports.

What will you work?

30.50 hours/week

Monday to Friday

This position follows the assigned Advanced Educational Support calendar and affords the successful candidate to have some school breaks off.

Advanced Educational Support Positions are right for you if you:

  • are able to remain calm in extremely stressful situations
  • have a positive, flexible attitude
  • have problem-solving skills
  • possess decision-making skills
  • have an interest in helping people resolve problems
  • have specialized skills, training and/or experience in an identified area (trauma informed practice, conflict resolution, family support access, Advanced Behavioral Support)
  • can work independently and as part of a team

What will you do?

The Pathways Program is an educational program designed to assist middle and high school students who exhibit severe and challenging behaviours related to neurodiversity. This program is an opportunity for students to receive small group instruction within a specialized setting. The intent is to provide proactive support and intervention for students with neurodiversity who, despite intentional supports within their home school setting, continue to struggle significantly with behavioural, social and/or emotional issues. Students will be directed to the program when all avenues of support have been investigated and safety is identified as a major concern.

The Pathways Program provides a highly structured environment in order to help students develop skills for coping with adversity, challenges and changes. In addition to numeracy and literacy instruction, the students receive instruction in order to develop social and problem solving skills. Skills specifically focus on expressing and responding to feelings, dealing with anger, frustration and fear, responding to stress as well as interacting with others.

The Pathways Program is a fully supervised program with a teacher, an Advanced Education Support and Educational Assistant. The program offers a multi-disciplinary team approach with interagency support to assist with programming where appropriate. No more than eight students will be enrolled in the program at any given time.

An AES is required to provide supports and services in a flexible, coordinated and effective way. The AES will work collaboratively with the Pathways teacher, EA and administrative team, to develop programming goals that focus on behaviour, academics, communication and social skills. The individual will work as part of a team and independently to implement programming and supports as identified by the team. This includes working with other staff in meeting the personal and social care needs of individuals and promoting their well-being in a way that values the dignity of the individual and promotes choice, respect, participation and independence.

Lethbridge School Division makes every effort to ensure staff and student safety, but not every unsafe behavior on the part of students can be anticipated. Students may display challenging/impulsive behaviors including hitting, kicking, spitting, biting, throwing items, poor attention, and difficulty making transitions.

Please note that only those selected for further consideration will be contacted regarding an interview.
