Summary

**Position is from Wednesday to Friday.

Reporting to the Orthoptist Supervisor, and under the clinical direction of a Physician, performs various specialized eye tests, provides the referring Physician with test results, analyzes test results and provides diagnosis and therapy, and makes therapy recommendations. Assists Ophthalmologist with special duties such as surgical procedures. Ensures the department is well equipped and machinery is in good working order to function efficiently.

Qualifications / Skills and Education

EducationSuccessful graduation from an approved program in Orthoptics from an accredited training school, current Cardiac Life Support course and completion of the Ophthalmic Assistant course plus one year's recent related experience, or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.Canadian Orthoptic Council (COC) Certified.Skills and AbilitiesAbility to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.Ability to deal with others effectively.Physical ability to carry out the duties of the position.Ability to organize work.Ability to operate related equipment.

Duties and Responsibilities

Evaluates patients by gathering information require to determine the diagnosis and treatment to be carried out by either the Ophthalmologist or Orthoptist. Monitors patient progress by comparing previous and current test results and alerts the Physician to unexpected changes in patient status.Provides treatment for patients based on test results such as exercises, patching therapy and prism therapy.Prepares reports on tests performed as required.Uses a computerized patient booking system to book patient appointments. Processes medical billing according to established procedures using a computerized billing process.Takes photographs of patients eyes as per Physician request. Labels photographs and prepares collage for interpretation by Physician and reference for monitoring patient progress.Maintains departmental ward stock supply such as drugs, linens, surgical supply sets, equipment supplies such as light bulbs and chin rest papers, and office supplies by checking inventory and completing and sending requisitions to appropriate departments. Maintains daily inventory of Physician examining room by checking that all equipment is present and required drugs are available.Maintains equipment by performing duties such as changing light bulbs, adding chin rest papers and cleaning as required. Performs minor repairs to equipment and informs the Supervisor or Physician of equipment malfunctions.Participates in research projects by adjusting testing procedures to meet research protocols.Explains various procedures to patients and answers questions and concerns as required. Assists with injections and minor surgical procedures such as applying various topical anaesthetics as per Physician orders, holding eyelids, steadying patient head, measuring patient deviation for adjustable sutures and calming patient. Administers drugs per Physician orders. Provides orientation to hospital policies and procedures and teaches and demonstrates ophthalmic and orthoptic test procedures to Fellow, Residents, medical and orthoptic students.Provides feedback on performance as required.Performs other related duties as assigned.
