The Solstice team includes experts in soils, forestry, wildlife, hydrology, wetland and vegetation ecology, Geographic Information System (GIS) analysis, remote-sensing, Environmental Site Assessments (ESAs), risk management and monitoring, remediation, reclamation, hydrogeology and environmental regulatory and policy experts. Position Overview

Our Ecological Services team is seeking a Junior/Intermediate Ecologist to support environmental assessment and monitoring projects. This role includes both office and field activities. Duties will include data entry, literature reviews and other research tasks, as well as field preparation, and a variety of field surveys on biophysical features such as soil, vegetation, wetlands, breeding birds, den and nest sweeps.

The focus of the Ecological Services team is to:

  • Develop, complete and support ecological projects/programs, across various industries in western Canada
  • Provide services including environmental assessments and regulatory approvals, environmental compliance monitoring programs, biodiversity studies, pre-disturbance assessments
  • Support the Solstice Strategic Solutions team and Assessment, Risk & Reclamation team
  • Provide spill response services to key clients and partners
Experience

Minimum 3 years’ experience in the environmental consulting industry, with direct experience supporting various environmental field programs and associated reporting related environmental and biophysical assessments, wetland assessments, and monitoring programs for linear developments, transportation and development projects, and other industries. Strong skills focused on vegetation is an asset.

Education

  • B.Sc. or M.Sc. in Biology, Environmental Science, Ecology, or other program with an environmental focus.
  • Must be registered as a Professional Biologist or Biologist in Training, individuals working towards becoming an Authenticating Professional under the provincial Wetland Policy is an asset.

Position Requirements

The suitable candidate for this position will require a diverse skill set in both the field and office components of environmental consulting. This includes a strong understanding of the consulting industry.

More specific position requirements include:

Technical Responsibilities and Activities
  • Conduct literature reviews, desktop reviews, data searches and requests, research
  • Perform field setup duties including: reviewing scope of work, logistics support, equipment preparation (including all technological devices, applications, and data collection), ground disturbance requirements, project and safety meetings.
  • Undertake a variety of field programs and demonstrate excellent field skills in general ecological data collection, including vegetation and wildlife inventory skills. Understanding of soils and water quality data collection is an asset.
  • Complete data entry with keen attention to detail and assist with data evaluations and interpreting analytical results
  • Contribute to reporting associated with applicable project scopes
  • Support regulatory submission to government reporting programs (e.g. OneStop)
  • Continually improve working knowledge of all relevant regulations and guidelines associated with your projects including (but not limited to): the Water Act, Wetland Policy, Public Lands Act, Wildlife Act, Historic Resources Act, Fisheries Act, Species at Risk Act, and the Migratory Bird Convention Act
Additional Requirements
  • Self-starter who has strong ability to set goals and achieve those goals; work independently and possesses a willingness to learn.
  • Possess creative problem-solving skills with a strong ability to assess and resolve problems or challenges as they arise and implement timely solutions.
  • Field work and extended travel are important components of the work
  • Proficiency in ArcGIS and statistical analysis is an asset.
  • Proficiency with the Microsoft Office Suite of services
