WORK ILLUSTRATION:

The Power Line Technician constructs, operates, maintains and repairs overhead and underground electrical and distribution systems. They erect and maintain steel, wood, fiberglass, laminate and concrete poles, structures, and other related hardware. They install, maintain and repair overhead and underground powerlines and cables, and other associated equipment, such as insulators, conductors, lightening arrestors, switches, metering systems, transformers and lighting and control systems. They splice and terminate conductors and related wiring to connect power distribution and transmission networks. These duties will be performed to the level of the applicable skills and knowledge of the incumbent, under the direction of a Certified Crew Leader. The incumbent is expected to behave ethically and follow the established code of business conduct, policies and internal control procedures, laws and regulations governing Toronto Hydro.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
  1. Demonstrates safe work practices
  2. Communicates with customers and staff
  3. Engages in job planning with the Crew Leader and/or Supervisor and follows the plan
  4. Selects, operates and maintains tools and equipment
  5. Safely operates Company vehicles and maintains necessary licences and training for the use of Company vehicles
  6. Installs, maintains and removes power pole systems
  7. Installs and maintains overhead power systems
  8. Installs and maintains conductors and control wiring including powerlines and cables
  9. Troubleshoots overhead and underground power systems
  10. Installs and maintains underground distribution systems
  11. Installs, maintains and removes transformers
  12. Installs, operates and maintains system protection, control and instrumentation equipment
  13. Handles energized lines using rubber protective equipment
  14. Handles energized lines using live line tool methods
  15. Selects, maintains and operates rigging equipment
  16. Follows regulatory procedures and employer’s procedures
  17. Identifies defects, contraventions and dangers
  18. Applies discretion to solve occupational health and safety problems, and reports are unresolved problems
REQUIREMENTS:

Fully qualified Red Seal 434AJourney Person or a combination of education, equivalent designations and/or experience as a Journey Person may be considered. Valid DZ license in good standing. Physically able to perform the essential duties in all weather conditions. Comfortable working at heights and in confined spaces. Ability to read and interpret distribution system construction drawings and supporting documents. Knowledge of the Electrical Safety Authority Regulation 22/04, Toronto Hydro and Utility Work Protection Code, WHMIS, CPR, First Aid and all other applicable legislation. Demonstrated proficiency in a PC Windows environment and associated desktop software applications.
