Reporting to the Chief Operating Officer, Pulp Products, the Managing Director will lead the Celgar Pulp Operations on a continued journey to world-class safety and operational excellence. This role offers an opportunity for someone looking to leverage their broad-based operational leadership strengths to adapt to new challenges and apply best practices and work collaboratively with Mercer’s broader leadership team; supporting the priorities of a complex and multifaceted business.
Responsibilities● Values-based Leadership: Championing Mercer’s Core Purpose and Values and Code of Business Conduct and Ethics, as well as Celgar’s World Class Safety Values, Operating Principles and Common Purpose.
● Strategic Direction: Continuously aligning Celgar’s strategic direction with Mercer’s through long-term capital and people planning. Monitoring and adjusting Celgar’s direction based on organizational strengths and
weaknesses opportunities and threats.
● Organization Development: Championing and supporting existing policies, programs and processes designed to build leadership capacity and organizational learning. Establishing new programs and systems as appropriate.
● Stakeholder Management: Continuing to build on existing relationships with both internal and external stakeholders including union, employees, First Nations, community, government and non-government entities in
maintaining Celgar’s continued social license to operate.
● Tactical Support: Taking a hands-on approach to providing visible and supportive leadership to Celgar’s people as they carry out day-to-day operations. Building effective respect-based relationships while helping the
organization set priorities and break down barriers to achieving goals.
● Risk Management: Identifying both internal and external risks to the operation and providing the direction and resources necessary to effectively manage and mitigate them.
The successful candidate will have proven general management experience as an operations leader; and will lead the development and execution of the business strategy at the operations. The individual will possess the following qualifications and experience:
● Strategic thinker with a big-picture and long-range outlook with more than 15 years of management experience. Providing senior leadership in a pulp mill or similar operation is ideal.
● Experienced working in complex processing environments in the industrial sector.
● Proven track record of driving continuous improvement, safety, quality, and environmental improvement based on current and future best practices and technology advancements. Dedicated to world-class safety and health status.
● Proven track record of driving operational excellence and efficiency within a unionized operation.
● Previous responsibility for budgeting and financial reporting oversight within a capital-intensive business; and strong financial acumen.
● Strong project management skills: the ability to prioritize multiple and competing priorities.
● A positive track record of values-based leadership and relationship building. ‒ An inclusive leader; with the right balance of being warm and nurturing and at the same time, firm and fair. ‒ A mature, deliberate, transparent leadership style.
● Familiarity and comfort managing diverse stakeholder relationships including government, union, and community relations with a high level of energy and perseverance.
● Well regarded for maintaining positive relationships with key strategic external customers.
● Flexible and agile leader; readily adaptable to macro and micro business environment changes; and comfortable working with a high level of autonomy.
● The successful candidate will have an undergraduate degree in science, engineering, or a related discipline. A postgraduate degree would be advantageous.
A competitive compensation package consisting of base salary, short and long-term incentives, commensurate with the senior level of the role and related responsibilities will be paid to the successful candidate.
