About the OpportunityThe Director of the Tailings Environmental Priority Area (EPA) is a leader within the Pathways Technology Development team. The Tailings EPA works to enhance oil sands tailings management through the development of new and improved sustainable technologies. That means developing approaches to reduce tailings volumes, mitigate the environmental impact of tailings production and accelerate tailings reclamation. Efficient management of tailings is key to reducing the environmental impact of oil sands operations and enhancing the overall sustainability of the oil sands industry.The Director, Tailings EPA will be the lead staff support to the Tailings EPA Steering Committee (SC), which consists of subject matter experts from each of the Pathways mining company members. The Director will work very closely with SC members to develop strategy for collaborative research/innovation and facilitate regular SC meetings and discussions. Supported by a Tailings EPA Advisor, the Director will oversee the review and handling of technology submissions received from external innovators and the repository of technologies contributed by member companies.About the RoleThe Tailings EPA team is part of the Technology Development function within Pathways, which is led by the Vice President, Technology Development & COSIA. The Director, Tailings EPA will report to the Vice President. The Director, Tailings EPA serves in a key leadership role within the Technology Development team, frequently interacting and collaborating with the Vice President and other Pathways Priority Areas including Water, GHG, Land, Monitoring, Innovation+ and External Innovation. Key ResponsibilitiesChair the Tailings EPA Steering Committee (SC) and provide support for all SC activitiesContribute to the development of cross-EPA plans and activities and lead the development of the Tailings EPA Strategic PlanWorking with the Tailings EPA SC and other technical advisors, assess technology, best practices and knowledge gaps with respect to achieving Tailings EPA Environmental Performance Indicators (EPIs)Facilitate the development of EPA-led Studies (EPALS) and Joint Industry Projects (JIPs) that close the gaps relative to EPIsDrive, track and report the performance of the Tailings EPAFacilitate effective communication and organization within the Tailings EPAActively contribute information and enable knowledge transfer among EPA members, between EPA Directors and with the Vice President of Technology Development & COSIACoordinate sharing of EPALS and JIP deliverables and other types of information among membersPrepare reports, presentations and information, as needed, to support the Tailings EPA Steering Committee, the Shareholders Steering Committee and member companiesHire and manage staff or contractor support as requiredParticipate in relevant tailings industry events on behalf of COSIAEncourage and develop strategic partnerships, especially outside of COSIA membership, from the industrial service, academic and government areasSupervise the Advisor, Tailings EPA SkillsAbility to operate effectively and successfully lead a diverse team through consensus building in an environment of influence rather than through authority and controlEffective communicator, catalyst for innovation and networkerAble to facilitate difficult topics, drive ‘big picture’ thinking and design and utilize effective structures and processes to advance a group towards specific goalsThe ability to engage, motivate and coordinate staff and member company representatives in a fast-paced environment with limited direct supervision or oversight is essentialDemonstrated ability to collaborate across internal boundaries and involve cross-organizational members and teams to leverage diverse perspectives and experience to maximize integrated valueStrong computer skills – PowerPoint, Excel, SharePointEducation and ExperienceRequiredUniversity degree(s) in a technology development related discipline(s) (science, engineering, business)A minimum of 15 years of experience in industry, including oil sands specific experienceDeep technical knowledge and experience related to the Tailings EPAA demonstrated ability to work with multiple parties and stakeholders to develop and implement projects and initiatives with successful outcomesExcellent oral and written communication skills, including presentations, group facilitation and public speakingA broad professional network within relevant industry sectors and/or research and innovation communitiesDemonstrated strategy development, planning, organizational and management skillsExperience with budgeting, contracting, project management, technology development innovation funnel and intellectual propertyOutstanding interpersonal and leadership skills and business knowledge An in-depth understanding of Canada’s oil sands and its environmental challenges Experience working with a member-driven organization and/or related governance structureOther Considerations Occasional travel may be required.How to ApplyThis posting will remain open until June 7, 2024, at 4:00pm MT.Interested candidates should submit their resume and cover letter to recruitment@pathwaysalliance.ca with “Director, Tailings EPA” in the subject line.
