Recreation Therapist

Full-Time, Permanent

Downtown Toronto

MPA have been appointed by a leading non-profit organization that cares for children and young people who have complex mental health needs.

In this role, you will create, plan and facilitate various therapeutic recreation programs to support the holistic needs of clients. This involves conducting assessments followed by developing individual and group recreation plans in partnership with the multidisciplinary team.

Responsibilities:

  • Develop, implement, lead and evaluate individualised and group therapeutic programs and events, according to goals and objectives.
  • Collaborate with the multidisciplinary team to incorporate recreation therapy activities in clients’ care.
  • Complete assessments and evaluate/monitor client progress, working towards discharge.
  • Make recommendations for treatment or referrals to other services.
  • Maintain accurate and accurate client documentation.
  • Ensure recreation therapy services are safe and effective by participating in safety, risk management and quality improvement activities.
  • Liaise with other departments/external agencies to meet clients needs.
  • Adhere to the Code of Ethics and Standards of Practice as stipulated by Therapeutic Recreation Ontario.

Qualifications:

Essential:

  • Degree/Diploma in Recreation/Recreation Therapy.
  • Current registration with Therapeutic Recreation of Ontario (TRO).
  • 1-2 years of experience working in an acute setting.
  • Experience working with crisis management and acute mental health/addictions.
  • Ability to assess, plan and implement evidence-based treatment interventions, individualised to each patients’ needs within the guidelines of the Therapeutic Recreation Service Model and in line with TRO Standards of Practice.
  • Excellent professional judgement skills and ability to use your initiative.
  • Good interpersonal communication skills to include conflict resolution.
  • Willingness to work evenings and weekends as required.
  • Proficiency using Microsoft Outlook, Excel and Word.
  • Must be willing to obtain CTRS certification within 6 months of commencing employment.

Desirable:

  • Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist (CTRS) certification.
  • Clinical expertise with medically complex clients is an asset.
