Position Summary

Reporting to the Assistant Chief – Paid Per Call and Fire Prevention, the Fire Inspector is responsible for leading and actively participating in the provision of Fire Safety Education and Code Enforcement. Through the Fire Service Quality Management Plan (QMP) the Fire Inspector ensures consistent attention to operational preparedness and ongoing community planning. They conduct fire investigations and conduct or direct fire inspections. The Fire Inspector directs and coordinates daily public interaction and ensures the provision of public education related to prevention, safety, and risk mitigation through a strategic community approach.

  • Conduct fire inspections and pre-incident planning, including hydrant or water cooperative mapping and area familiarization
  • Evaluate and comment on internal file circulations related to projects, events and/or developments within Rocky View County from a fire safety perspective and in compliance with applicable codes.
  • Conduct fire investigations into origin and cause, including on an emergency call out basis, and complete all required documentation.
  • Provide support to other departments in the fulfillment of Fire Prevention Code compliance requirements.
  • Deliver or coordinate public education programs.
  • Respond promptly to public inquiries and participate in concern resolution.
  • Act as a technical representative on the Greater Bragg Creek FireSmart Committee.
  • Serve as a County FireSmart representative, supporting the community champion for community based FireSmart initiatives.
  • Represent Fire Services at corporate or external meetings as assigned, providing emergency management, planning and prevention insight.
  • Ensure readiness of all assigned vehicles, equipment, and supplies, maintaining them in proper working order.
  • Perform other duties and special projects as assigned.
Leadership
  • Support suppression crews in the delivery of fire prevention activities and public education programs.
  • Endeavor to build a safe and positive team atmosphere and foster positive relationships with internal and external customers.
Health & Safety
  • Maintain an adequate level of physical fitness to continuously perform all duties required in this position including but not limited to excellent cardiovascular fitness and bending, lifting, and carrying as required.
  • Ensure that all the operations under their supervision adhere to the requirements of the County’s OHS Program.
Position Requirements
  • Minimum of 5 years related experience.
  • NFPA 1033 and 1031
  • Safety Codes Officer (B-2, C-2) designation
  • ICS 100, 200
  • Local FireSmart Representative (LFR) training
  • Standard First Aid, CPR HCP
  • Knowledge of local, provincial, and national codes, bylaws and laws relating to fire prevention and the fire service.
  • Demonstrated leadership skills, team building, problem solving and good communication, coaching and mentoring abilities.
  • Ability to scientifically determine the causality of an incident and lead the application of documented investigation techniques.
  • Clean Criminal Record.
  • Clean 5-year driver’s abstract and possess a valid class 5 driver’s license.
  • Possess the physical agility and stamina sufficient to perform all functions of this position in adverse conditions.
  • Ability to maintain self-discipline and professionalism at all times.
  • Ability to react quickly and remain calm in stressful situations.
  • Satisfactory completion of a medical examination.
  • Available to work Monday to Friday and perform On-Call duty if required.
  • Demonstrate knowledge and experience of basic computer functions (ex. use of MS Office Suite) as well as basic keyboarding skills.
