Who We Are:

MarketLab is a start-up investment research company in the high growth retail investor space. The concept came from the Founder’s experiences as an investor in the hedge fund and mutual fund industries, where he concluded that the return outperformance for professional investors (hedge funds, mutual funds, institutional investors) versus retail investors has more to do with access to information than financial acumen. From deep-dive reports on companies; reporting analysis; economic forecasts; market sentiment; etc., the edge that Wall Street research departments provide to the pros vastly stacks the deck against everyday investors. MarketLab’s goal is to level the playing field by providing high-quality financial research and analysis, tailored to the unique needs of retail investors – concise, focused, and jargon-free. And under a sponsorship and ad-supported model, we intend to provide this to our potential target market of +80 million retail investors for free. What We Do:

MarketLab’s ultimate objective is to provide full equity research coverage across the majority of stocks that retail investors transact in, as well as accompanying economic, sector, and market strategy coverage; and to build out a platform that provides investors with the data, analytics, and tools to invest smarter and more efficiently.

 

Our initial product is our newsletter StreetSmarts ( which provides beginner friendly insight and analysis on the important business and financial stories of the day.

 

How You’ll Make an Impact:

The Market Analyst will be an integral part of our team. To start, the role will entail spearheading our social media presence. We’re seeking someone who can blend their understanding of global capital markets with creative social media strategies to grow online engagement for MarketLab and our newsletter Streetsmarts. The Market Analyst will also be expected to work closely with the Founder in newsletter editing and providing ideas for research and content from day one. Other job responsibilities may include:

  • Online content creation across a number of platforms (ex LinkedIn, Instagram, Tiktok) leveraging existing Streetsmarts newsletter graphs, data, etc.
  • Develop a social media strategy paired with analytics and a performance monitoring plan of the strategy
  • Introductory ability to extrapolate financial and economic events into sound investment logic and insight
  • Communicate complex financial concepts into concise, easy to understand ideas for layperson investors
  • Build and maintain strong working relations with all teammates

 

What We’re Looking For:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Finance or a related field, with 0-5 years of work experience
  • A passion for investing and financial markets
  • Desire to play a fundamental role in building a start-up
  • Solid understanding of social media platforms and trends

 

What You Will Bring:

  • Excellent analytical, written, presentation and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to take initiative, work independently and handle multiple tasks
  • Excellent time management skills with the ability to work under tight deadlines
  • Hustle, heart and willingness to put in the effort and hours required during this critical infancy stage
  • Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint

 

Who You’d Be Working With:

My name is Ryan Metcalf and I’m the Founder and CEO of MarketLab. I live in Toronto, Canada with my wife and two kids. After completing my Master of Financial Economics at the University of Toronto, I began my career as an Investment Banker at Credit Suisse’s London, UK office in 2011 (RIP, CS). After that, I moved back to Canada to work at a small healthcare focused hedge fund before ultimately moving to a large mutual fund to cover healthcare stocks. I came up with the idea of MarketLab during the pandemic. It seemed crazy to me that despite the massive influx of new investors and technology, that even the most passionate investors were managing their family’s financial future based on news snippets, forums, and 10Ks they can’t even correctly understand. I’m passionate about investing and following the market, and I’ve always wanted to try my hand at entrepreneurship. I’m excited to do both at MarketLab, and hopefully help some people make a better future for themselves along the way.

  • Position is 100% remote; however, if the candidate is Toronto-based we can facilitate regular in-person working sessions
  • Expected salary of C$60,000
  • In addition to salary, the hired individual would receive equity in the company
