The Vancouver Island University (VIU) Geography department maintains a variety of undergraduate and post-graduate offerings across three knowledge streams: Urban and Social Sustainability, Sustainable Resource Management, and a General Stream.

Our geography program provides a balance of theoretical and applied course work designed to strengthen student communication skills, deliver a range of employable skills, challenge students to think critically, analyze problems and seek resolutions to issues in areas of geographic interests.

Duties:

Teach one or both of the following Geography course sections, which includes the preparation and delivery of lectures and labs, assessment and evaluation of students, facilitation of students' integration of theory and practice, and provision of student support during office hours.

GEOG 101: Environmental Geography (1 section);
W 11:30-2:30; Face-to-Face

GEOG 211: Atmospheric Environments (1 section)
M 8:30-10:30, Blended delivery (Lecture online synchronous with F2F synchronous option OR online synchronous only)
W 8:30-10:30, Lab face-to-face

Candidates must demonstrate commitment to teaching, learning and student success through scholarship and institutional service. Successful candidates will participate in a wide range of activities outside the classroom, including student support; institutional, faculty and departmental committee meetings and other initiatives; and professional activities in keeping with their disciplines in and outside the institution.

Required Qualifications:

Master's degree in Geography, Environmental Studies, or a related discipline from an appropriately accredited institution.

  • Recent experience in teaching undergraduate and/or graduate courses in the relevant subject areas; face to face and online teaching experience and demonstrated excellence in teaching
  • Requisite experience and expertise to be qualified to teach GEOG 101 and/or GEOG 211

Preferred Qualifications:

  • A doctoral degree in Geography, Environmental Studies, or a related discipline from an accredited institution
  • Record of engagement in scholarly activities
  • Research in pedagogy, experience with integration of First Nations perspectives, experience with field-based and experiential learning, and integration of innovative teaching practices and technologies into the curriculum are highly desirable
