This is a continuing contract position of Special Responsibility - Level 2.

This position is effective September 1, 2024.

This is a Level 2 Position of Special Responsibility. This position will include case management, remedial instruction, social/severe behaviour and mental health support skills. The hours of work are not always regular school hours and will include workshops, presentations and meetings beyond the regular school day. This position provides direct coordinating and supportive services to the Alternate Learning Program (ALPs) in the development, coordination, delivery and growth of educational services.

  • This assignment supports the District based Alternate Learning Program. Responsibilities will include case management, planning, evaluation and implementation of individualized education plans(IEPs) for complex youth claimed in Ministry of Education high incidence categories that are assigned to the program, as well as supervision and direction of Behavioural Certified Education Assistants(CEAs) attached to the program. The assignment will require liaising with community agencies such as RCMP, Integrated Youth, Ministry of Children and Families(MCFD), Youth Probations, Child and Youth Mental Health(CYMH), Interior Health, Mental Health and Addictions, North Okanagan Youth and Family Services, Family Resource Centre, etc. and the development of transition plans for youth into Secondary Schools. The focus on the program is on supporting at risk youth who present significant behavioural challenges with a wide variety of precipitating factors such as substance abuse and addictions, dysfunctional relationships, socioeconomic challenges combined with learning disabilities and/or gaps within their learning. This assignment presents significant challenges and requires commitment to build appropriate relationships with very challenging youth.

    Qualifications:

    • Masters Degree in Special Education or a Post Graduate Diploma in Special Education or equivalent
    • Formal training in Level B assessment
    • Recommended minimum 5 years teaching experience which includes 3 years experience supporting and case managing secondary students claimed in Ministry of Education Behavioural Categories (H - students requiring intensive behaviour intervention or students with serious mental illness and R – Students requiring behaviour support or students with mental illness)
    • Demonstrated evidence of strong interpersonal skills
    • Extensive experience in collaboratively developing Individual Education Plans(IEP) for students with complex educational needs (severe behaviour, fetal alcohol spectrum disorder, severe learning disabilities, substance abuse and addictions, etc) with multi-disciplinary teams
    • Extensive experience developing social skills programs and engaging at risk youth in both academic and community programs
    • Advanced skills in using technology for learning
    • CPI certification, or commitment to be trained as soon as possible
    • Extensive knowledge of:
      • Behaviour disorders and interventions
      • Inclusionary practices
      • Remediation and differentiation
      • Restorative practices
      • Ministry of Education Special Education Categories criteria
      • Successful behaviour management programming (positive behaviour support, functional behaviour assessment, etc.)

    Specific Responsibilities :

    Working with the alternate programs leadership team and will:

    • Provide coordination for the provision of Alternate Learning services.
    • Provide staff leadership in sustaining levels of excellence and best practices.
    • Provide curricular and assessment leadership.
    • Create programs and processes which enhance student engagement and commitment to success in learning and social-emotional development.
    • Promote the growth of personalized learning and equitable access for all learners.
    • Directly support student intake and transition processes, including the development of IEPs or personalized learning plans for all students.
    • Liaise with school and district based staff and community agencies.
    • Ensure the development and maintenance of student records.
    • Organize and provide in-service to staff on a wide range of topics to support student success.
    • Help develop capacity among current and new staff in school functions and best practice.
    • Coordinate school based team, site and case management team meetings.
    • Maintain appropriate programs of behaviour intervention.
    • Represent the program interests in community meetings.
    • Facilitate the development and achievement of program goals.
    • Work with community partner groups to ensure the success of students.
    • Coordinate the deployment of site based support personnel with the Principal.
    • Report directly to the Principal of Alternate Programs.
