TheR. Ross Beattie Senior Public School Indigenous Student Advisor (ISA) willassist with leading and implementing programs, services and other supports tomeet the unique needs of First Nation, Metis and Inuit students, and theirfamilies, with a focus on successful student learning from grade 7 to grade 8.The Indigenous Student Advisor will report directly to the administrative teamat R. Ross Beattie Senior Public School and the Indigenous Lead Administratorfor District School Board Ontario North East.

Responsibilitieswill include but are not limited to:

  • Willestablish trusting relationships with students, families, staff, andcommunities
  • Willidentify and work to remove barriers to student success
  • Willprovide guidance and support to identify pathways based on individualizedstrengths and interests
  • Willensure ongoing open dialogue with families
  • Willprovide access to resources that foster a sense of belonging
  • Willfacilitate access to community supports, course planning and mentorshipfor students
  • Willcreate and enhance a welcoming supportive space for students in variousschools with various school staff
  • Willbuild close supportive relationships with students, families, andcommunities
  • Willact as an advocate for students who identify as Indigenous
  • Willfacilitate strong communication between the schools, families, and FirstNation communities
  • Willassist with developing and/or enhancing cultural activities in the schools
  • Willbuild and maintain community partnerships with agencies supportingcultural awareness within our schools (ie., Keepers of the Circle, MinoM’shki-ki, Community Elders and Knowledge Keepers)

Qualifications:

  • OntarioSecondary School Diploma and/or experience
  • Post-secondaryeducation is an asset (e.g., Educational Assistant, Social Work)
  • Validdriver’s license is required
  • Demonstratedexperience/knowledge of cultural teachings and best practices is required
