We are a team of software engineers, lawyers and designers working hard to achieve our long-term mission.We're looking for a Director of Data Engineering and Governance to design and develop data processing platforms and frameworks for Data Science, Engineering and Machine Learning. This is a very hands-on role. You will be expected to lead by example, provide technical leadership and guide the team in making technical decisions and developing solutions that meets good data processing standards.Responsibilities:Hands-on problem solving and codingLead by example, with humility, curiosity, experimental mindset, extreme coding, architecting and problem solving attitudeDesign thinkingBalance for short-term quick wins and long-term gains.Oversee, design, and develop real-time and batch processing data processing frameworksDevelop high ROI data structuring methodologies for unstructured textEnsuring high quality data ingestions with reliable logging and metricsLiaison, coordinate, plan and prioritize projects between AI, Backend and Product Integration teams.Planning and estimating features in the roadmap to determine the next sprint goalsDesigning architectural improvements to an event-driven microservices architectureConsistently identifying and reducing technical debtWriting and designing automated unit and integration test strategiesWorking with a high performing senior engineering teamPerforming code reviews and providing constructive feedback for other team membersStay updated with the latest data engineering tools (Snowflake, etc), strategies and cloud integrationsQualifications:Bachelor's degree in Computer Science/Engineering or equivalent5+ years of cloud-native data engineering experienceDemonstrated experience in Micro-services Architecture, Data Integration Design, Data Streaming (AWS Kinesis, Lambda. Apache Kafka), In-memory & distributed caching and Data ArchitecturesProficient in writing streaming applications and integration servicesStrong understanding of data storage principles, data formats (Avro, Parquet, Delta) and writing ETLs for batch pipelines (Spark, Airflow etc.)Strong suite of skills in software development with focus on code refactoring, design patterns, design-driven development, CI/CD and highly scalable applicationsProven experience in providing technical leadership and mentoring other engineers for best practices on data engineeringKnowledge/experience in designing systems for Data-centric + Model-centric AI developmentHigh growth expectations for yourself and your teamAdditional Preferred Qualifications:Certifications in Amazon Web Services. Previous experience building cloud native data engineering systems.Effective communication skillsTechnical project management experiencePrevious experience working with machine learning teams in the NLP domainKnowledge/experience in engineering high performance neural semantic systems, knowledge graphs, and dialogue systemsDemonstrated drive for self-development and continuous learningLocated in the Greater Toronto Area, and available for hybrid work environmentCulture:We are a dynamic team of engineers bringing together iterative NLP model development, high performance systems engineering and effective software development.
